This week we finished our term on a positive note with our 'Pyjama and Teddy Day!' The School Leaders did a super job with setting up the day and running the afternoon activities. The staff also had some fun! Thank you School Leaders and Miss Moratti for making it such a memorable day for everyone.
Today Kawaka farewelled Tom our mandarin teacher,  who has been working in Kawaka one day a week for a year now. Tom has enriched our students' lives and we are grateful for his service.

We are blessed to be the only primary school in Invercargill that has a mandarin teacher and we look forward to meeting the next teacher who is arriving in Term 3.

We welcome the following new students to Matai:
George, Ebany and Rocco!

Tuition registrations have now closed.
You will be contacted by the tutor at the start of Term 3 to confirm your place and time.
We finish the term with the last of the school's strategic goals that come from our Charter for 2020-2024.  "Ensure our school provides for the wellbeing of Ākonga (students) and Kaiako (teachers)."

Our school has been on a wellbeing journey for over 2 years now. This has come about after:
1) We noticed an increasing level of students arriving as new entrants displaying higher levels of anxiety.
2) Working and pay conditions for New Zealand teachers and principals has meant increasing levels of teacher and principal burnout.

The following are the annual goals the Board has committed to for 2020:
  • Social and emotional learning is further supported through the schoolwide implementation of the 'Second Steps' programme.
  • The 'Made to Move' contract will support senior students to improve participation in fair play.
  • A shared understanding will be established as to how we support the wellbeing of Ākonga and Kaiako.
We look forward to making important progress in this area.
Term 3 is shaping up to be a very exciting term full of creativity as classes engage in Dance, Drama, Visual Art and Music. These areas will be explored through our school-wide topic: 'Kaitiakitanga' (guardianship).
On Thursday 24 September we look forward to bringing you a showcase of our learning and talents at the Arts Extravaganza!

If you are someone who loves any of the Arts disciplines and would be happy to offer your help, please speak with your child's teacher or email We are keen to bring in outside expertise so our students are further enriched!

ICAS online exams are set for the following dates in Term 3:

- Science Year 5-6: Wednesday 19 Aug $16
- English Year 5-6: Thursday 27 Aug $16
