April 19th-25th: National Volunteer Appreciation Week

April 19th – 25th is National Volunteer Appreciation Month.  We have so many volunteers to be thankful for at the Alzheimer Society of Oxford. Volunteers are involved in almost every aspect of our work including (but not limited to) office work, reception, gardening, maintenance, cleaning, visiting individuals who are living with dementia through our Volunteer Companion Program, assisting with our major fundraising Walk for Alzheimer’s, providing governance and financial management, etc.  We would not be who we are today as an organization without our volunteers. Our volunteer’s skills, commitment, time, passion and generosity makes a huge difference in the Alzheimer Society of Oxford’s ability to make a difference in our client’s lives. Thank you to each and every one of our volunteers. Volunteers, We Applaud You!

Tips for Care Partners

Self Care Matters
It is very easy for a care partner to put their needs aside, especially during stressful times. Try these simple self-care tips that will help reduce your stress levels and bring a calmer approach to your day. More self-care tips can be found here
  • Move: Stretch your arms, jump in place or walk around the living room. Get your body moving in a safe and manageable way to help bring on those feel-good endorphins.
  • Call a friend: Feeling disconnected? Call, text or email a friend and say hi. A simple communication from a friend or family member can help alleviate stress and act as a good distraction.
  • Grab a snack: A healthy snack can provide the nutrients and energy you need to get through your day.
Call for Support
Do you need support or need to talk to someone about the changes and/or stresses of being a care partner? The Ontario Caregiver Helpline continues to provide 24/7 support to care partners, including connection and referrals to information, supports and services. You can also contact the Alzheimer Society of Oxford and speak with a Family Support Worker, Monday to Friday, 9:00am-4:30pm by calling 519-421-2466 or 1-877-594-2368.

Start a New Project: Totes for Scrubs

Having purposeful work during this challenging time is a great way to help keep you healthy. If you sew or know of someone who sews, our healthcare workers would benefit from your time and skill. The Alzheimer Society of Oxford is asking for our community’s involvement to provide Totes for Scrubs so healthcare workers can take their uniforms home to be laundered more safely during COVID-19. The totes are simple to make and can be made from a cotton pillow case, a cotton sheet, a cotton skirt, etc. If you would like to make a tote(s), please email info@alzheimer.oxford.on.ca and we will let you know which facilities in Oxford are needing totes and the details as to where to drop off your finished totes.

Please click here for the instructions to make a tote(s).
