The new year is a great time to make resolutions. Even small changes can yield big results. What can you do in 2017 for your program?   Can you organize a small area? Purge old toys and materials or recycle the 100 toilet paper tubes you collected.  Reducing clutter reduces stress.

What can you do for the children in your program?  How can you foster their creativity?  Can you try a new lesson or sing a new song?   Play more?  Get down on the floor and interact with your children in a different way?  Children value this attention and you will learn more about them.

What will you do for YOU?  As an educator, you spend so much time taking care of everyone else.  It’s time to do something for yourself.  Is there a class you want to take?  Do you want to renew or start a hobby?  Do something you enjoy. You will naturally become a better educator when you take care of yourself first.

The Winners of the InvestiGator Club® Pre-K Curriculum and Materials (valued at $2,644) are:
·      Melissa Hudler, Family Child Care Provider in Washington County
·      Dayspring Head Start at St. William of York in Baltimore City

Congratulations to these winners!

TIPS: Family Engagement!

Research shows us that children tend to do better when programs engage families in supporting their children’s learning at home. Family engagement goes beyond basic communication with families. It requires deeper involvement and relationship building that promotes strong, healthy families. Family engagement is ongoing rather than something that occurs only occasionally in the course of a child’s connection with your program.

Announcing: A New Achievement for Accredited Programs!

We are constantly seeking feedback from our early childhood and school-age community. One program suggested that we include an achievement for accredited programs so that families who use the Find A Program feature of the Maryland EXCELS website, can easily identify programs that have achieved state or national accreditation.

We are happy to announce that effective Monday, January 30, 2017, Maryland EXCELS programs will be able to submit an accreditation certificate and receive an "Accredited Program" Additional Achievement!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Monday, January 16 is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Martin Luther King, Jr., dedicated his life to achieving equality for all people. His dream was to live in a society where all people, regardless of the color of their skin, would live together in peace and love.

Every day, young children can explore concepts such as dreams, kindness, peace, and caring for others.

Visit The King Center to increase your own knowledge of Martin Luther King, Jr. Then plan on engaging the children in your life with these fun and engaging activities.

“Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.”  ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Family Engagement Modules

The Maryland Family Engagement Early Childhood Provider module is now available. The module offers information to parents and families about what family engagement is, how to practice it and the benefits of building a partnership with providers and schools to support young children's school readiness. The module is available in both English and Spanish.  At the successful completion of the module, providers will receive a certificate for two Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Access the modules here.
