Happy Birthday Maryland EXCELS! This July marks the 4th anniversary of Maryland EXCELS.  Since 2013, the team at Maryland EXCELS has been proud of the hard work and accomplishments of the many programs/providers across the state who work to provide quality child care and early education every day.
Did you know that prior to the launch of Maryland EXCELS, the previous Tiered Reimbursement System only had about 200 programs participating? Now, the system, which you know as Maryland EXCELS, has over 5000 programs and providers participating and showing their commitment to quality!

New Maryland EXCELS Toolkit to Debut this Month!

Maryland EXCELS will be supporting child care programs with a new online resource later this month! The Maryland EXCELS Toolkit, which will be available to the public, provides information and resources to help achieve Quality Ratings, assess program policies and practices, and set goals for continuous quality improvement. The interactive toolkit is designed to give users a personalized experience through navigation that’s easy to follow. The resources include video tutorials, articles, activities, and an interactive feature that will help providers build a new policy for their program.
A Summer Garden
It’s not too late to start a summer garden. Young minds are fascinated with seeds and plants.
July is the perfect time to plant cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, garlic, collard greens, lettuce, watercress, herbs, and more.
Help children understand how seeds grow with an activity called Garden in a Glove.  They will see the process of germination in clear plastic gloves as the seeds sprout.

TIPS! Technology Use and Screen-Time Policy

Technology in our current world is changing and evolving constantly.  Media technology is part of daily life for most of us, including for children.  This easy access means that adults must make decisions about the time children spend in front of screens.  This is especially important in the summer months, when the heat and additional free time can mean more screen time.
