Maryland EXCELS in the Community

Sign up to be a part of the Hagerstown Suns & Maryland EXCELS promotions starting April 6! We have four tickets to each of the Suns' home games. Use this form to sign up for tickets. Please limit your sign up to two games per program. When you sign up to participate, you will have an opportunity to have your child go onto the field at the beginning of the game to say “Play Ball!” For more information or for questions, email social@marylandexcels.org.

Be sure to follow us on social media and online to get news of upcoming events with your local teams including the Bowie Baysox, Frederick Keys, Aberdeen Ironbirds, Delmarva Shorebirds, and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs!
Maryland EXCELS is actively engaged in informing families about the importance of high quality child care and early education, as well as letting them know Maryland EXCELS participating programs. Did you know that Maryland EXCELS is now on the radio? Tune in to your local station (92Q, 106.5, 93.1 and 98 Rock) to hear the messages!  In the coming months, Maryland EXCELS will also be partnering with a variety of local programs and organizations to spread the word about what your programs do every day! Stay tuned for more information about how to get involved in these efforts and related giveaways.
March 18: Maryland EXCELS at the B’More Healthy EXPO

Maryland EXCELS took part in the B'More Healthy EXPO on March 18. The free event hosted about 40,000 people throughout the course of the day. The Maryland EXCELS team had a great opportunity to connect with many families and providers about the importance of high quality child care and early education in Maryland. One of the favorite giveaway items was the Maryland EXCELS t-shirt. Did you get one? Share a photo with us wearing your t-shirt at social@marylandexcels.org. We can't wait to see these shirts all over the state! View more photos from the event here.
Families using Child Care Subsidy must have a voucher before enrolling in a program.

A voucher authorizes child care payment.  Each voucher has a begin date and an end authorization date.  Payment will not be made prior to or after these dates.
  • It is the family’s responsibility to obtain and provide the voucher or to get a copy of the voucher from Child Care Subsidy (CCS) Central or the Local Department of Social Services (LDSS).
  • Care should not be provided without an active voucher, unless the parent is willing to pay the full cost of childcare.

Gladys Arredondo and Good Shepherd Lutheran Preschool were the winners of the $2500 Kaplan Shopping Spree last month! Congrats to both of our winners!

April 22 is Earth Day!

Earth needs to be protected so its resources will be available for many generations. It’s never too early to pass this message along to young children who can keep our planet clean and learn to reduce, reuse, recycle, restore, replenish and celebrate the earth. Young children can make a difference.  Little steps become big changes.

What does your program do to take care of the earth? Share your photos with us at social@marylandexcels.org.  Have you considered getting the Maryland EXCELS Eco-Friendly Achievement?  For more information, click here.

Celebrate Diversity

April is Celebrate Diversity Month.  Celebrate Diversity Month began in 2004 to honor and recognize the diversity that surrounds us in all aspects of our lives; it acknowledges differences in race, gender, language, socio-economic status, ethnicity, nationality and abilities.  By understanding that we are all different and that we each bring incredible talents, abilities and skills to our shared world, we can gain a deeper understanding of one another.  This not only will make your program or community a better place but it can have long lasting impact on the children in your program.  How will you celebrate diversity in your program every day?

TIPS!  Considering children’s cultures and languages in the materials you choose.

When selecting materials for the children in your program, the choices you make shape how the children work, play, explore and learn.  Choosing materials that reflect children’s cultures and home languages promotes respect for diversity.  Filling your classroom environment with materials that reflect who they are also creates a sense of belonging and acceptance for children.  Additionally, diverse materials can encourage curiosity and discussion, enabling other children to learn more about the world around them.

The week of April 24– 28 is The Week of the Young Child: an annual celebration hosted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

Throughout the Week of the Young Child, Maryland EXCELS will be highlighting the stories of Maryland EXCELS providers and their children. Send a photo and/or video with a short summary describing your photo for a chance to be featured on our social media pages. Email photos, videos and other information to social@marylandexcels.org

NAEYC offers activities for each day of the week including Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Work Together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday and Family Friday.  Check out the website for fun activities.

The Maryland EXCELS Team thanks you for all you do to let the magic of childhood shine every week of the year!
