WELCOME MARIAH HIMES!

IMP welcomes AmeriCorps VISTA member Mariah HImes. A recent graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in Political Science, Mariah has a variety of service experience including  tutoring children and working with refugees, including immersion in a refugee community for a summer program. Her VISTA project will involve communications and data and evaluation.

Mariah is excited to spend a year (or more?) in Iowa in national service. She "looks forward to having real snow, meeting nice Iowans, and helping build the capacity of the Iowa Mentoring Partnership to better help it's programs serve youth". Feel free to contact Mariah at Mariah.himes@iowa.gov with any questions about her role or tips on great Iowan things to do and see.

BRING OUT THE BEST

As Brandon develops financial literacy skills under Enrique’s mentoring, Enrique has his eyes opened to the difficulties young people face living in poverty. “My heart has grown more caring and passionate toward financially underprivileged families and communities. So many have it so tough!” He adds, “Brandon's world is very challenging. It's hard to be a ‘good kid’ when so much in his life is negative and difficult and full of struggle. Brandon is learning that ‘fighting’ is not just about punching or kicking - but standing firm for what you believe in and want.”

Enrique adds, “I try and to ask questions about his life—and I try to just listen—especially when he shares honestly about what he is thinking and feeling and learning.” Like many mentors, Enrique wishes he “spent more time with Brandon than I actually do!”

Use Congressional recess to your advantage – meet with your legislators at home

On July 15th Congress recessed for the summer, which means they’ll will be back home in their states and local communities meeting with constituents about a host of issues through Labor Day. This provides an excellent opportunity for #MentoringAdvocates to invite Members of Congress to visit their organizations, to request meetings and to attend town hall meetings.Make Congressional recess work for you!
