RESILIENCY AND POTENTIAL

During the process of planning Kelly’s next several years at Roosevelt high, the mentee expressed an interest in financial literacy. Because Kelly doesn’t have access to a computer at home, Michele printed out the school’s course catalog and they went through it together. They found she needed a financial literacy class for one of her credits, so Kelly is very excited to start learning about financial literacy in the near future. When asked where she felt she was in terms of financial literacy on a scale of 1-10, Kelly candidly shared, “0.” Encouragingly, Michele responded with “That’s ok—plenty of kids are in the same place. You will master that skill.”

Monthly Advocacy Tip: April is National Volunteer Month Invite your legislators out to see how your program recognizes and appreciates its volunteers. Get your legislator interested in being a mentor!

Monthly Marketing Tip: April is National Financial Literacy Month and National Volunteer Month. Some example posts for Facebook, Twitter, or othjer social media outlets are provided below:
  • Mentoring is a unique and powerful platform for students to gain knowledge and perspective they may not be getting elsewhere, such as how to manage money. Help young people facing adversity become financially literate and be a #mentorIRL
  • Guide a young person in life skills like financial planning to help them succeed in life. Be a #mentorIRl
  • Does your mentee need to develop the skills to be economically independent? Talk with them about budgeting and setting goals to start planning ahead. #mentorIRL
 

GOVERNORS VOLUNTEER AWARDS


Recognize your outstanding volunteers with this award, presented by the governor at regional events in June. Submission information is due April 10 and is available here.

 

IOWA NONPROFIT SUMMIT CALL FOR WORKSHOPS


The 2017 Summit will be held in Altoona on October 24th and 25th. Proposals for workshop presentations are being accepted until May 5th. More information here.
