COACHES CHALLENGE

As you  know, the Coaches Mentoring Challenge kicked off last month. This season, be sure to reach out to your local high school and college coaches to get their support in recruiting new members. The Coaches Mentoring Challenge is mainly directed towards football coaches, but football might not necessarily be the biggest draw in your community! Reach out to other fall sports coaches as well. Most coaches seem to really support mentoring and may just not know about this great campaign. Try hosting a “Mentoring Night” at a local game where the benefits of mentoring a young person can really be highlighted. Showcase some of your matches at halftime or before a game. Reach out to other programs in your area to see how they have incorporated local coaches into their Coaches Challenge recruiting efforts.
Check out the Coaches Challenge toolkit here.
You may report your recruits for the first reporting period, August 1-Sept. 10th here.

Good luck! And remember to have fun!

ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH

September is  Attendance Awareness Month with the third week in the month (September 15-21, 2014) designated as The Mentoring Effect & Attendance Week.

The Attendance Awareness Month toolkit for Mentoring Partnerships includes key messaging, sample social media content, and tips on how to get involved not only during “Mentoring Effect Week”, but the entire month of September. As we all know, mentoring has a BIG impact on academic achievement for students and supports healthy communities. We encourage you to download the toolkit from the MENTOR website and participate with us in supporting the concept of school every day. And don’t forget to pin your organization to the Attendance Awareness Action MAP to showcase your participation along with campaign supporters across the nation. Together, we can help increase interest and engagement in school for America’s youth.

Harnessing the Power of Mentoring In Schools

Thursday, September 18, Noon

There is a lot of pressure on school based mentoring relationships. Pressure to yield results that prove increased attendance, higher test scores, reduced rates of disciplinary referrals and heightened graduation rates.  Are these realistic outcomes of mentoring in schools? Or does mentoring’s influence on a student’s self-perception yield a magic all its’ own?
