Time to start planning for National Mentoring Month 2017!

Honor your mentors for their volunteer service over the past year with a certificate of recognition from the governor. Please download the spreadsheet after you open it here and return it by November 18  to  More than 3,000 certificates from the governor's office are requested, so it is important to  submit complete and accurate information by this deadline


Nominate an outstanding mentor for the Excellence in Mentoring Awards. The award honors mentors who have been mentoring for at least two years and go above and beyond in their role.  Mentors and their mentees will be recognized in a ceremony on April 28 at the Volunteer Iowa awards ceremony.  Nomination forms are available here and are due January 16, 2017.

Seeking Peer Reviewers

The Iowa Department of Education is seeking applications for their peer review process for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers FY17 grant competition. The best reviewers will be individuals who are familiar with high-quality youth programs in communities, schools, and faith-based or other organizations that serve youth.

Individuals affiliated with a submitting organization are not eligible to participate in the peer review.

AmeriCorps VISTA members are full-time volunteers who create and expand programs that bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty. VISTA members serve primarily in the areas of economic opportunity, healthy futures, education, and veterans & military families.

When the two aren’t talking and working on professional skills, they like to play guitar hero and sports. Kenny’s been impressed not only by Keith’s growth and maturity, but also by his own ability to keep up with his mentee: “Didn’t think at over 60 I’d be playing sports. It’s good exercise.” While Keith supports and encourages Kenny, the mentee also supports his mentor as the older man tries new activities that Kenny enjoys. Keith sums up his commitment to Keith and mentoring as “bend with the flow. What your youth likes, now you like. You will get more out of than you can imagine.”

Monthly Advocacy Tip: write your legislator to introduce yourself and tell them you look forward to speaking with them at the Day at the Capitol in February. Share a little about your program and how mentoring impacts your community.
Monthly Marketing Tip: November is Thankfulness and Appreciation month. Share on your websites and social media stories and information about thankful mentees. Examples include:
•Young people who have mentors report that mentoring gives them the support and guidance they need to lead productive lives. Thank you for being a #mentorIRL
•Mentees appreciate mentoring and often seek opportunities later to be a #mentorIRL
•Mentored youth speak highly of mentoring, saying it helps them stay on track in school, make good choices, and provides consistent support. Thank you for being a #mentorIRL

#Giving Tuesday, Nov 29, is a funraising and nonprofit awareness campaign that is heavily promoted through social media channels. The Giving Tuesday website has many resources for participation and including a toolkit.
