Ready for adventure? Here comes the bus!

This month, Westcave purchased an 83-passenger 2001 Bluebird school bus, and has begun the process of transforming it into the Roadrunner Outdoor Adventure Bus.

Exciting additions to our Natural Leaders program, thanks to TPWD grant

We’re delighted to share that Westcave was recently named one of just 26 recipients for a 2015 Texas Parks and Wildlife CO-OP grant. This $39,000 grant will support a significant expansion of our Natural Leaders Network (NLN) of Austin.  more>>

Westcave partners with U.S. Fish & Wildlife for native prairie restoration

“I can sit on the porch before my door and see miles of the most beautiful prairie interwoven with groves of timber, surpassing, in my mind, the beauties of the sea. Think of seeing a tract of land on a slight incline covered with flowers and rich meadow grass for 12 to 20 miles” - John Brooke, an early settler in the tallgrass prairies of Texas, 1849

Of the millions of acres of beautiful Texas prairie that once existed, less than 1% now remains. Restoring our native prairies is of the utmost importance, as the grasses and flowering plants of our native prairies provide invaluable habitat and food sources for wildlife, birds and insects.

Animals, birds and people will all have reason to be glad about this news: More than eight acres of land at Westcave Preserve are now being prepared for a native prairie restoration.  more>>
Westcave staff and volunteers, with the help of American Youthworks members, have been hard at work clearing out invasive plant species and woody shrubs, in preparation for a prescribed burn.
