Moving Forward in Faith and Peace

I felt it important to say a few words on the life-changing journey that my family has been on this past year. With the recent journey and passing of my beautiful and beloved wife Kim, I have been given the gift of perspective: perspective on the fragility and brevity of life, perspective and strengthening of my spiritual faith, and perspective on priorities in life.

Kim is greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, but she would want us to leave all feelings of heaviness behind. My two beautiful resilient children (Luke 7 & Emery 4) are happy and engaged. We talk and pray to “mommy” every day. We feel her with us at all moments. Heaven is lucky to have her and she can do far more there than here. I pray for strength to be the best father and role model I can be. We take each day as a gift and move forward in faith and peace. I have a renewed and strengthened resolve to honor the Lord in my my family life, my friendships, my teaching, and my painting. Kim's radiating smile will always be with me.
Life is short, precious, and fleeting - the test of true faith is revealed and realized when exercised in times of darkness.

Video Release - NIAGARA DVD!

After three years of hard work and (literally) countless hours, I am excited to announce the official release of my 9 hour instructional film “Painting Niagara, A Master Class in Studio Painting”. I am happy to have partnered with Eric Rhoads and Streamline Art Productions for this project. This marks a unique achievement in that it is the only comprehensive film documenting a major studio painting (8 feet wide) filmed over a 6 month period. I share every creative and technical step of the process including on-site field paintings and drawings, designing the composition, the preparation and explanation of the materials, the various layers of oil painting, and culminating with sharing the designing and making of a custom water-gilded museum frame from scratch. Several mini-lessons on color, atmosphere, composition and various other aspects associated with creating a major studio painting are enhanced with commentary and animations.

Workshops 2017

Due to the events that have unfolded in my life this past year, I will be keeping my presentations to a minimum. As some dates are secured I will announce them via facebook and email.

“Bridal Veil Dawn, Romans 12:15”
18x24 Oil SLL 2017

My most recent exploration of Niagara Falls is a view of Bridal Veil Falls from the Canadian side peering across the Niagara Escarpment. The early morning light affords the artist with a soft beautiful light shinning through the uprising mist. This work will be on display at my upcoming show at the Castellani Art Museum in Niagara Falls, NY this May.

Shop Talk

Going Non-Toxic
In an effort to reduce the use of toxic materials in the studio, I have been experimenting with two products: SoySolv 2 and Alkyd Walnut Oil Medium.

Thus far, I have been very pleased.

Alkyd Walnut Oil Medium is a non-toxic medium that I have been very pleased with. It has a great working quality, it will not yellow, and it dries to a tough film overnight. I usually intermix it with Natural Pigments Oleogel for varied effects.

SoySolv is a Soy based non-toxic solvent that I have found useful in cleaning brushes. I have not seen any research regarding using this as a painting medium in the underpainting stages, so I have not taken that step. If an OMS alternative comes up, I'll be sure and post it.

Final Thoughts
Get out and paint - it is good for the soul.
The more you learn - the harder it becomes since you become more critical.
Remember  - drawing pats you on the back, painting is a humbling experience.
90% of the time a painting is in the "awkward looking state", while a drawing looks "good" as you progress.
Thus, keep your mind on the final outcome and press on.
