This week's cover dog “LEO”

Multi CH Leonardo Dicaprio

Gloria Kerr

When did you begin your judging career?
I began judging in 2000, after years of handling all breeds and breeding Goldens, Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Akitas  and Chinese Cresteds.

What groups are you licensed for?
I am approved for Sporting, Toys, Non-Sporting and Herding as well as 6 working breeds, Whippets and Miniature Schnauzers.   I’m in the process of applying for more Terriers and Hounds.

What was / is your primary breed?
Golden Retrievers are my primary breed, I got my first one in 1963 and still have them.

Do you like/dislike the use of bait in your ring?
I believe that bait is OK when used properly, but when it is used instead of training the dog, I dislike it.  Many handlers are using bait as feeding in the ring and forget to train for hard stack, a thing of the past.

What is the most annoying thing that an exhibitor can do in your ring?
I am annoyed by bad sportsmanship.  An example would be when handlers run up on the dog in front of them.   If a dog is going slowly in front then the handler should stop and give that person/dog a chance to go ahead.  Running up on the dog in front will not make one’s dog look better.

What is the smartest thing an exhibitor can do in your ring?
The smartest thing an exhibitor can do in the ring is pay attention, watch what is happening, so they will know what will be asked of them.  Sometimes you can stand outside of the ring and watch the ring procedure, so you will be aware of what to do.

What is your home city?
My home city is Tucson, Arizona.  I live in the desert outside of Tucson.

What field are/were you employed in outside of dogs?
I guess I have to say that dogs have been much of my life since 1970 when I finished my first dog.

Do you have hobbies or special interest other than judging?
I love travel, photography, gardening, horses and art of many kinds.

What is the funniest thing that you have ever seen in the ring?
I think the funniest thing that I saw, was when Jimmy Moses lost the lead on his dog and the dog continued around the ring perfectly without him!

Do you have hobbies or special interest other than judging?
I sew, quilt, knit, read, relax and enjoy retirement.

What is the funniest thing that you have ever seen in the ring?
A few years ago, I was attending a show and was talking to a woman who appeared slightly familiar.  This is the short version of our conversation—She states, she lives in Fort Collins, CO, Hmm, I lived there when attending Colorado State University. We discussed where I lived and where she lives.  Then she states that she is going to Estes Park, CO, next weekend.  Hmm, I said I worked there.  She asked when and where.  At that point we discovered I had been her camp counselor for 4 years at Cheley Colorado Camps.  And she had been one of my favorite campers!  We have enjoyed rekindling our relationship into a great friendship.  What a great world the dog world can be!
