VOLUME 31, ISSUE 23, JUNE 26, 2022

The PCA's General Assembly has been this week, and we'll share soon how the week went for our denomination. In the meantime, as elders and their families and others leave Birmingham, pray for their safe return as they make their way home to their churches in preparation for Sunday.

In prayer would you also remember Trent Smith? His home for a short while is in Missouri with the Army, and he has asked for prayer and also for you to write to him. Here's his mailing address:

As for Fairview, this Sunday we'll continue our sermon series through 1 Peter, and as you know by now a recurring theme in this book is suffering. With that in mind, I offer here the second verse in our hymn of response, from "Our Great Savior." The line says, "Jesus! What a Guide and Keeper! While the tempest still is high, storms about me, night o'er takes me, He, my Pilot, hears my cry."

Jesus hears your cries, and He has suffered in your place so you can echo the words of Romans 8:18: "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is about to be revealed to us."

See you Sunday.
Our nursery continues to grow, and we need your help to care for our youngest members and point them to Jesus! Tammy Teal is helping with signups, and she'd love to hear from you and schedule you for nursery. Click here to send her an email or give her a call at 541.274.1158. Thank you for serving in the nursery.

VBS wouldn't happen without our bevy of volunteers, and we still need more! If you do not currently have a volunteer role in this important discipleship and outreach event, please email me. We could use help in the classrooms, with registration, crafts, decoration, photography, setup, and cleanup. Thanks for your willingness to serve our children!

Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
Published in 2004, Gilead is a bittersweet account of a dying Congregationalist minister, John Ames. The story, which is set in Gilead, Iowa, in 1956, unfolds in the form of a letter that he is writing to his young son to tell him all the things he will not be able to tell him when he gets older. With a slow and thoughtful pace, John shares past family memories and resolves an old personal grievance with the son of his best friend, Robert Boughton, who is a Presbyterian minister. As John explores the bonds and breakdowns in relationships between fathers and sons, he moves back and forth between his memories and the present. John's heartfelt, joyous love of life and his profound religious faith weave throughout the narrative.

Gilead "is so serenely beautiful, wrote one reviewer, "that one feels touched by grace just to read it."

Pick up a copy from Dan Nowell this Sunday and write August 17, 6:15 p.m. on your calendar for a book discussion party led by Dan.

If you currently teach Sunday school for adults or high schoolers, or if you would like to teach, please come to this training on July 13 at 6:15 p.m. Future training sessions will also occur on select Wednesdays in the summer. Stay tuned.
