FAIRVIEW COLUMNS

OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
FAIRVIEW FAMILY
Thank you to all of you who have been volunteering and praying your way through this week for our Vacation Bible School! We have had a great time studying God's Word, discussing it, and learning scripture - not to mention the fun with recreation, crafts, singing, and skits! I've have more photos to share soon, but for now let me share with you a brief story from a mother I met yesterday.

This interaction didn't take place at VBS but rather at Hazel and Eliza's swim lesson. In between watching belly flops from our girls off of the diving board Britni and I spoke with this mother about Vacation Bible School. She spoke highly of her experience with VBS, and here's why:

"I came to believe in Jesus through Vacation Bible School when I was in the fourth grade," she said.

Let that sink in. We believe God ordains the ends as well as the means, and He may use Vacation Bible School and the ministry of the Word therein as the means to draw children (and perhaps their families!) in faith to Himself. Let this be encouragement for you on our last evening together.

Thanks again for your ministry this week. I sure am looking forward to worship with you on Sunday. The Fairview Columns will be on hiatus for two weeks, but I hope to write to you again soon.
-Kenny

ANNOUNCEMENTS
ADULT SUMMER READING CLUB
Gilead by Marilynne Robinson
Published in 2004, Gilead is a bittersweet account of a dying Congregationalist minister, John Ames. The story, which is set in Gilead, Iowa, in 1956, unfolds in the form of a letter that he is writing to his young son to tell him all the things he will not be able to tell him when he gets older. With a slow and thoughtful pace, John shares past family memories and resolves an old personal grievance with the son of his best friend, Robert Boughton, who is a Presbyterian minister. As John explores the bonds and breakdowns in relationships between fathers and sons, he moves back and forth between his memories and the present. John's heartfelt, joyous love of life and his profound religious faith weave throughout the narrative.

Gilead "is so serenely beautiful, wrote one reviewer, "that one feels touched by grace just to read it."

Pick up a copy from Dan Nowell this Sunday and write August 17, 6:15 p.m. on your calendar for a book discussion party led by Dan.

Book of the Month | A Little Book on the Christian Life by John Calvin
For the last year or so, I've used this space to suggest a book to you, and this month's book is one that you can read again and again. In fact the contents of this book are lifted from Book 3 of the Institutes of the Christian Religion. It's a great way to begin reading Calvin. Pick up a copy wherever good books are sold. What are you reading these days? Let me know!
