FAIRVIEW COLUMNS

OUR WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
"Weeping may tarry for the night; but joy comes with the morning" (Psalm 30:5b)
FAIRVIEW FAMILY,
Grace, mercy, and peace to you from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. As many of you know, I've spent much of my personal study time in the Psalms this year, and I've come upon #88, the darkest within the Psalter.

"You have put me in the depths of the pit, in the regions dark and deep. Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and you overwhelm me with all your waves" (Vs. 6-7).

Doesn't this belong in Lamentations? On the scale of cheeriest psalms this one is in the cellar. Psalm 104 ("I will sing to the Lord as long as I live!") this is not.

However, even if you find yourself with a fondness for the melancholy, you have to admit Psalm 88 is not without light. The psalmist here (possessing one of the greatest names in the Old Testament  - Heman), even as he closes the psalm saying "My companions have become darkness," still knows to look up. In the midst of despair he not only cries to the Lord, but he tells us he does.

"Every day I call upon you, O LORD; I spread out my hands to you" (vs. 9).

He even lets us into his schedule of prayer saying he does so "day and night" (vs. 1) and especially in the morning (13).

Church family, many of you are going through dark times. Follow Heman's lead and bend God's ear (vs. 2), for He is the God of your salvation (vs. 1).

Crying out to Jesus for you and cannot wait for Sunday.
-Kenny

Book of the Month | Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
For a while now, I've used this space to suggest a book to you; October's book is one that I have not read but hoping to get to soon. It comes with recommendations from other respected pastors. I suggest it now as we will soon be covering the Sermon on the Mount within our sermon series on Matthew. What else are you reading these days? Let me know!
