Positively Yours

Rev. Sally Beth Shore
Our world is filled with suffering and cries out change, but ironically, if we want to improve things, focusing on what's wrong may cause more problems than solutions. In recent decades, the social sciences have produced a revolution in our understanding of positivity, optimism, and happiness, as well as ways to achieve them. This seems congruous with the central task of religion which is to offer and and sustain hope. As Unitarian Universalists, what would be possible if we incorporated the science of optimism into our theological approach? It’s easy to see what’s wrong, but what’s right?

JOYS & CONCERNS
January Straw Poll Results & Plan

In July 2018, the Worship Committee began a trial re-sequencing of Joys & Concerns in the order of service.  Based on feedback from the Open Forum, we developed an online straw poll to gather feedback from members, friends, and others.

The Worship Committee reviewed the results at its meeting on January 27th. The results are shown below.  37 individuals responded. The average is 2.73, which inclines slightly to dislike.

How do you like the current location of Joys & Concerns during the closing circle?

The Committee has decided to move Joys & Concerns back into the service after the message. We believe this will respect both our community and guest speakers.

We plan to implement this change beginning February 3rd and continue through March. We will then offer another straw poll in April to be reviewed at our meeting on April 28th.  Your feedback is also welcome during this trial.

They are available should concerns about the Fellowship arise and are available as an additional resource. Bringing issues directly to the Board is still welcome.

WE CAN DO BETTER THAN THIS
Whatever the challenge or hardship encountered, UUs tend to believe that we can make things better. However, our central focus can be seen more as encouraging the good in human nature rather than expunging the bad.

Unitarian Universalist Congregations covenant to affirm and promote Seven Principles. We do not offer a set of beliefs and judgments; but encourage actions which offer and sustain hope. We do not belittle the beliefs of others; but seek a shared compassionate awareness of all people, by all people. Rather than wallowing in lamentations over injustice, we actively work to bring justice to all.

We affirm and promote.
To affirm is to state as a fact; to assert strongly and publicly.
To promote is to further the progress of a cause, venture, or aim; to support or actively encourage.

These are verbs. UUs like verbs.  We Affirm and Promote:
Deeds. Not Creeds
