April talk – Head Gardeners

On Wednesday April 27th, Ambra Edwards will be talking about the lives, vision and achievements of head gardeners, based on her award-winning book. Talk starts 7.30pm at Uplyme Village Hall. Refreshments from 7pm. Members free; guests £3.

Clean plant pots and bags will be available to collect to use to put your plants donations in for the May plant sale.

With spring upon us, it’s time to get out and about so why not try some of our trips and talks over the next few months:

May coach trip – Abbey Farm Flowers and Abbotsbury Sub-tropical Gardens

On Tuesday 10th May our trip starts with a private tour of the wildflower meadow and monks’ apothecary garden at Abbey Farm Flowers. We then move to Abbotsbury Sub-tropical Gardens - a botanical treasure-trove with walled garden, woodland walks, rhododendrons and bamboos.

Members £19; guests £22. Coach departs Uplyme Village Hall at 9.15am; an Axminster pick up is available by prior arrangement. To book please contact Jenny Harding jennyhlyme@hotmail.co.uk 07773 604137.

May Plant Sale and Coffee Morning

Our annual plant sale is an important fund raiser, enabling us to keep annual membership costs low and subsidise speakers and trips. Anyone who has plants or produce to donate should bring them along at 9am to Uplyme Village Hall on Saturday 14th May. The plant sale will run from 10am to 12 noon and coffee and cakes will be available.

We welcome all plant donations – veg, bedding, perennials, annuals, shrubs. If you need some plant pots or bags for your plant donations please collect some from Uplyme Village Hall at the 27th April talk.

As well as plants we would also appreciate any cakes, eggs, jams, marmalades and preserves you could donate.

Entry £1 for all. There will also be a tombola.

Selling seeds for Ukraine

We have a range of Franchi vegetable seeds available for sale to raise funds for Ukraine. The seeds include speciality lettuces, courgettes, squash and beans. These will be available at the April 27th talk at Uplyme Village Hall for a donation. All proceeds will go to charity.

Alternatively, if you would be willing to grow on some of these seeds and donate the plants to sell at our Summer Flower and Produce Fair (sales proceeds will be ringfenced), please contact Jo Benke-Smith joanna.ulrhs@yahoo.com, and she'll bring the seeds to the talk on 27th for you to pick up.

Car parking volunteers needed for Summer Flower and Produce Fair

On Saturday July 9th we hold our Summer Flower and Produce Fair at Uplyme Village Hall. One of the key tasks for which we need volunteers is the car parking. We are looking for a total of eight volunteers to work in two teams of four, so we can spread the workload across the afternoon. Volunteers will have free entry to the show for the other part of the afternoon.

If you would be willing to help in principle (you don’t need to fully commit at this stage), please email Fiona Walker fionawalker.ulrhs@gmail.com

Fruit trees for local schools

In February Sir Ghillean Prance gave us a Zoom talk entitled Glorious Trees. He kindly waived a speaker’s fee and instead accepted our offer to buy a tree for each of three local schools, suggesting they should be fruit trees.

At the beginning of April ‘Bramley Seedling’ apple trees were planted at Mrs Ethelston’s CE Primary Academy, St Michael's CE VA Primary School and The Woodroffe School, with members of the society and Sir Ghillean in attendance. Here’s a selection of photos from the events.
