Note From the Director, READ Alliance
 
READ Alliance believes that the reading challenge in India can best be tackled with multiple solution providers coming together to help create a productive network for collecting, sharing and discussing issues around early grade reading.

Towards this end, READ Alliance project endeavors to build a READ Alliance Partner Network (RAPN) - a unique platform that will bring people together, while facilitating sharing of resources, knowledge, infrastructure and ideas to help create better and more effective interventions for reading. The project also promotes partnerships with the government system as well as within communities. We also aim to facilitate partnerships and conversations among various stakeholders through workshops, events, and newsletters.

Case Study: Community Leadership for Better Learning

Once a school with dangerously low enrollment levels, Puzhal Panchayat Union Middle School (PUMS) was awarded the ‘best school’ by the District Collector during the Republic Day celebrations in 2014.

The problems facing PUMS mirror those facing many other schools in the country—things like poverty, unstable home lives, language barriers, and poor quality of teaching and infrastructure. To address these problems, the Jain community trust of Puzhal stepped in. They decided to take matters in their hands, and have over the years, been instrumental in supplementing the schools with infrastructure, financial, and in-kind support.

“It is the best kind of public-private partnership, where the community has taken ownership of improving the education levels of their own".

The Global Book Alliance/REACH for Reading Call for Proposals seeks to support innovations that get the right books to all children, using results based financing modalities. 

The maximum budget for an activity financed through this call for proposals is expected to be $500,000 USD.

Improving Reading Skills by Encouraging Children to Read in School: A Randomized Evaluation of the Sa Aklat Sisikat Reading Program in the Philippines

Summary- The researchers, Ama Baafra Abeberese, Todd J. Kumler and Leigh L. Linden, evaluated a 31-day reading program where students were encouraged to read as many books as possible through daily reading activities in school. Overall, the results of the study suggest that an increased use of age appropriate reading materials by students is a viable strategy for improving student’s reading skills.
