RRRC Annual Meeting & Awards Recap
The Regional Commission hosted its 2018 Annual Meeting and Awards dinner on September 27th at Stoneridge Events Center in Fauquier County.  Mr. Chris Butler, Chairman of the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors and RRRC member, and Town of Warrenton Mayor Carter Nevill welcomed guests to the meeting, referencing the historical importance of regional partnerships and the necessity and benefit of working across jurisdictional boundaries today.

The 2018 Regional Leadership Government award was presented to Mr. Henry Lee Carter and the late Mrs. Judy Carter.  The Carters' legacy of stewardship and service to the region includes Mrs. Carter's 21 years of service on the Orange County School Board, Piedmont Regional Education Program, Orange County Economic Development Commission, and Education Foundation, and her tireless advocacy for children and public education.  Mr. Carter served 20 years on the Town of Orange Council, including four years as Mayor, and his leadership was key to projects varying from public transit expansion, water and wastewater infrastructure for the Towns of Orange and Gordonsville, and road improvement and downtown beautification projects.  The Carters' focus on "Community Service, Education, and Family" was the cornerstone of their leadership in the region.

Mr. John Meadows was presented with the 2018 Regional Leadership Citizen award.  Mr. Meadows has served for 20 years on the Fauquier County Board of Zoning Appeals and for 15 years on the Fauquier County Planning Commission and has been an active chair and vice-chair on each during his tenure.  Mr. Meadows was honored in part for his recognition that planning cannot end at the County boundary and that working beyond those boundaries is important, his advocacy for joint planning meetings with neighboring jurisdictions and towns, [and] his focus on moving forward while protecting rural agriculture and quality of life.

Along with the awards presentation, Regional Commisson members and meeting attendees heard a presentation from Pete Eshelman, Director of the Roanoke Outside Foundation, on Leveraging Regional Outdoor and Natural Assets for Economic Development.  Mr. Eshelman shared lessons from the Roanoke region's efforts at cultivating its outdoor recreation brand and image for residents, visitors, and business development opportunities.
