RRRC and Partners Receive Best Practices Award for FAMS Collaboration
The Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions (VAPDC) presented the Robert M. deVoursney Best Practices Award to the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission for the Foothills Area Mobility System (FAMS) partnership at the Association's Summer Conference in Roanoke last week.

The FAMS partnership was initiated by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission (RRRC) and Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services (RRCS) in 2009 based on a recommendation from the Rappahannock-Rapidan Coordinated Human Services Mobility (CHSM) Plan. The CHSM plan produced a regional vision for human services mobility and identified short, medium, and long-term strategies to address mobility problems of older adults, disabled, and low-income residents of the region. The Rappahannock-Rapidan CHSM plan identified five goals and strategies to address mobility issues including enhanced regional mobility coordination, information and education on mobility options, support for existing transit providers, expanded use and coordination of volunteer transportation services, and expanded inter-county and inter-regional transit routes, where feasible.

Since that initial planning process, FAMS has expanded to include transit providers, employers, volunteer transportation providers, and other service organizations in the region.  With support from the Department of Rail and Public Transportation, Federal Transit Administration, local governments, and the PATH Foundation, the partners also created the FAMS One-Call Center, a holistic mobility resource that provides information and referral to transportation options, coordinates with volunteer driver programs in the region, and offers travel training to assist senior citizens and persons with disabilities in utilizing public transportation options.

The full release is available on the VAPDC website.
Registration Open for Farmer-Buyer Mixer Event - September 24th
The Regional Commission is partnering with Piedmont Environmental Council on a Farm-to-Table Showcase event on Monday, September 24th beginning at 2pm at Rock Hill Farm in Culpeper.

Local food producers and buyers are invited to network and build new purchasing relationships!

Producers are invited to set up tables with displays of their products, food samples and information about their farm and growing methods. Buyers -- ranging from restaurant chefs and grocers to wholesale and institutional buyers -- will have the opportunity to meet producers and learn what local products are available.

The event is casual, with vendors set up from 2pm to 5pm and buyers invited to attend and mingle at any time.

County Population Pyramids Visualize Local Population Trends
Last month, the Weldon Cooper Center published a series of population pyramids showing the distribution of population by age group and sex for various geographies, including County-level, in Virginia.  As the StatChat article notes, "Population pyramids are useful for providing a quick, visual classification of a population’s age and sex structure at a particular point in time."

The graphic below shows the visualization of population for the Rappahannock-Rapidan region based on the 2017 U.S. Census Bureau estimates (Click the image for a larger version).  We encourage those interested in the visualizations for the Commonwealth of Virginia and individual counties to visit
