Democratizing the Green City: Sustainability and the Affordable Housing Crisis

On February 17-18, UC Santa Cruz is hosting a conference to examine a paradox: urban sustainability initiatives that are so vital in countering climate change can, through their improvements, contribute to driving up rents and driving out residents, and in the process, exacerbate sprawl, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change itself. Join experts from across the country as they explore displacement, ecological impacts, and affordable housing.

UC Santa Cruz Advances Environmental and Social Activism at Dawn of Trump Era

On January 18 students, faculty, and staff participated in a "teach-in" as part of a nation-wide day of democratic action. Teach-ins discussed economic inequality, combating Islamophobia, LGBT resistance, protesting tips, immigration, and climate-science advocacy.

Earlier this month, four UCSC faculty members have joined over 700 around the country in penning a letter to President Trump.  They ask that he recognize climate change as “an economic and existential threat to the country and to human and animal life on our planet."

UCSC students were counted among those who attended the Women's Marches in Santa Cruz, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. on January 21st.
