Transforming Study Abroad

"Empowering Locally, Educating Globally"

Through Rehearsing Change, a community-based program in which international students and local community members participate equally, Pachaysana is rethinking the way the world does study abroad. We make this initiative possible through 4 basic strategies:1) structuring the program so that everyone's needs are covered, meaning academic credit for international students via our partner, the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and full scholarships for local participants; 2) challenging academics focused on project-based, experiential learning, applying learning to real-world practice 3) linking learning to community development, so that our work benefits the host community, and 4) employing arts-based methodologies, which put everyone on the same level while simultaneously inspiring creativity, active participation and the development of communication and leadership skills. In summary, our program is a Safe Space where we rehearse the change we want to see in the world.

"What makes Rehearsing Change different?"

  • Amazon community - The first semester-long, community-based, language-immersion program in the Amazon Region.
  • Applied Arts - The first semester-long program in the world with a primary focus on Arts for Social Change
  • Fair Trade Learning - The only semester-long study abroad program in which the tuition of one pays for two in the same program of study. For each international student, a local counterpart participates in the exact same program.
  • Local Empowerment - Every effort is made to integrate Rehearsing Change into the host community's sustainable development plan.
