Seeking balance through study abroad

Our pilot semester of Rehearsing Change is underway! We are conducting a unique hybrid program where our international students split time between Quito, where we are partnered with an urban arts center that works in marginalized communities, the Nina Shunku Association, and the Amazon community of Mariscal Sucre, where we partner with community itself.

Rehearsing Change in Tiputini

At the end of January, after the first week of classes in Quito, our international students and their local counterparts from Mariscal Sucre had the amazing opportunity to meet and get to know one another at the Tiputini Biodiversity Station nestled deep in the Amazon Rainforest. The station, run by our partner USFQ, provides a unique and inspiring setting for both groups to learn about each other and the rainforest. Not only was the group able to explore the area and see astounding wildlife (such as birds, monkeys, spiders, and more!) but more importantly, they were able to reflect about the relationships between humans and nature, our understandings of community, and how to share with others what they have learned, making sure that their experiences lead to future action.

Students Sharing Their Experiences

Some of our international students and their local Nina Shunku counterparts in Quito, have shared a reflection regarding their experiences in the program thus far. These two groups are participating in three courses together, Theatre for Social Change and Innovation, Storytelling: Language and Movement, and Identity and Place. Stay tuned for an update on the fourth course, Design and Evaluation of Sustainable Community Projects, which we start this week in the community of Mariscal Sucre with our local counterparts there.

“I feel I have grown immensely in my capacity to connect and communicate with others. This program has taken me on a journey within myself in order for me to better engage in the world around.” - Ellie Rice, International student from Juniata College

“Es una Experiencia que no se debe desaprovechar porque te permite encontrar a ti mismo y compartir con los otros.” - “It’s an experience that you should take advantage of as it allows you to find yourself and share with others.” - Daniel Acosta, Nina Shunku local counterpart

“I have been thinking a lot about how to say, ‘Yo creo’ in Spanish, which could mean ‘I create’ or ‘I believe’. The idea that to believe is to create and to create is to believe. It is incredibly exciting to manifest that which I believe in, into real space and time … into pacha.” - Bronte Velez, International student form Brandeis University
