Pachaysana: Arts fos Social Change in the Ecuadorian Amazon

The Pachaysana Institute

Innovation, Education & Empowerment in the Ecuadorian Amazon.

We often hear the phrase "save the rainforest," but what can we really do about it? The Ecuadorian Amazon is quickly disappearing, threatening both biological and cultural diversity. Because of  plentiful natural resources in the region, even the smallest Amazon communities are connected to consumers around the world. Since the problem is both local and global, the solutions must come from a dialogue between local and international communities. The Pachaysana Institute creates programs that unite change agents from these two communities, and together they innovate new models in sustainable development. Follow us on Facebook.

Rehearsing Change: Empowering Locally, Educating Globally
Study Abroad that makes a difference!

REHEARSING CHANGE is a semester-long, community-based study abroad program in the Ecuadorian Amazon.  Like no other program in the world, we focus on the simultaneous, equitable education of local counterparts, meaning students work and study on a daily basis with community members. Facilitated by leading scholars and teaching artists, we combine challenging academics, Arts for Conflict Transformation methodology and experiential/service learning. Our project-based classes ask participants to examine the conflicts between local and global realities, and to use dialogue and innovation to create change.  REHEARSING CHANGE is a credit-bearing program designed, administered and evaluated by the Pachaysana Institute (an Ecuadorian NGO) and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ).  USFQ is an accredited institution that provides official transcripts to international students. Pachaysana partners with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito
Our official partner for Rehearsing Change!

We are very happy to be working with the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) on our Rehearsing Change program. USFQ is commonly considered the most distinguished private university in Ecuador. Recently recognized by the Ecuadorian government with the country's highest level of accreditation, USFQ is based on a liberal arts education model similar to most universities in the United States. In addition to liberal arts, USFQ has medical and law schools, architecture and culinary programs and partners with top academic institutions around the world. Among their international offerings are a Galapagos Islands exchange program (GAIAS), a Global Health program for medical & public health students, as well as research opportunities at their Tiputini Biodiverstiy Research station nestled deep in the Amazon Rainforest.

Arts for Social Change in the Ecuadorian Amazon
Empowerment and education.

Much of our programming uses the Arts, especially Theatre and Dance, to empower local communities to identify and transform problems related to sustainable development. The image above is part of an exercise in Image Theatre while hiking through the rainforest. This work helps us understand our community (and the Amazon Rainforest) as we begin to face the challenges of a globalized society. We are also using visual art and hip-hop dance, linking those into workshops on oral tradition, so as to find connections between traditional practices and expressions of contemporary culture already prevalent in the communities. In the community of Mariscal, a group of 6 youth learned a breakdance to present at the yearly community festivals.  In the background you can see graffiti that was part of the workshop. Feel free to see our other videos on the Pachaysana Youtube channel.
Pachaysana visits the US
Daniel Bryan, Executive Director, leads workshops at universities in the States.

During the months of February and March, Daniel Bryan is traveling to universities in different parts of the United States. In addition to promoting our Rehearsing Change program, he presents on development issues in the Ecuadorian Amazon and leads workshops on Theatre for Development. He just shared the presentation/workshop, "Rehearsing Change: Finding, Telling and Transforming the Development Story in the Ecuadorian Amazon" at the University of Texas at Austin. This presentation asks participants to engage an Arts for Social Change methodology to reconsider their role in the development occurring in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Later in the month Daniel will visit American University, Goucher College, Brown University, Brandeis University, Tufts University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, as well as present at the Ashoka University Exchange conference. Stay up to date with his travels (and read interesting articles) at the Pachaysana Facebook page.
