From my desk in the office

A very busy start to the year with many people travelling. Airfares are so low compared to the same time last year. And our dollar is also high against the Euro, Pound and US dollar. Below are some ideas and to view more information please click on the Colinthescot link.

From Monday 6 March until Thursday 16 March I will be changing the view from my desk. Well it has been 5 months!

I have friends who are living in Hoi An so am spending some time with them exploring the local countryside, probably by bicycle. It's a tough job but someone has to do it!

So during this time please email or text me as normal. I will be on my laptop and only four hours behind Melbourne time.

In the meantime enjoy the ideas below and let me continue to tell you where to go!

Japan - exquisite thatched-roof country lodge stay

In the north-east of Nara prefecture, Fukano was designated as "One of the Japan's best 100 mountain villages". With just 36 households, the village community is promoting the conservation of unspoilt landscape in the Japanese countryside. The traditional thatched-roof villa forms part of the traditional landscape of agricultural villages and farmhouses. Colinthescot.

Poll on Flight attendant “attractiveness” comes under fire

An American-based travel website, Trippy.com has received backlash after launching a poll to rate the attractiveness of female flight attendants in a bid to find the world’s hottest hostie. Colinthescot.

MORE weird requests to travel agents

The next time you're wandering through your local mall or high street and pass a travel agency, spare a thought for the poor sods you see smiling and nodding at their clients. Better still, go in and offer them a stiff drink, because with requests like these, they need your pity (and alcohol). Only in the US though!!!! Colinthescot.

Bondi Airbnb busted for being a fake!

This Airbnb was touted as the “perfect” Bondi Beach apartment; a “luxury villa” just minutes from the iconic Aussie beach, filled with natural light, sleek furniture and just $652 per night with space for 12 people. But it was too good to be true, in fact it was worse. Colinthescot.

Terrorism’s impact on travel

According to Compare Travel Insurance, major tourist sites have been shunned by tourists in the aftermath of terrorist activity. Paris lost an estimated €750m in tourism during the first half of 2016; tourism fell by 13 per cent in Belgium after Brussels came under siege and foreign tourist numbers to Turkey have dropped by 33 per cent in just one year. Simultaneously, travel insurance sales and queries went up. Colinthescot.

Etihad launches inflight fitness video

In the video, Vincent Kompany, Pablo Zabaleta, Fernando and Bacary Sagna team up with Etihad Airways cabin crew members to perform a series of stretches and exercise tips, alongside a special Manchester City guest.

Man City supporters are known for their passion and dedication to the team. Last season alone, any fan who travelled to support Man City at all of their international fixtures, would have travelled almost 50,000 miles. That’s almost 10 times more than the average person travels in a year! The video, which premiered inflight this month, will ensure Man City fans and all Etihad Airways guests network-wide are fit and ready for travel in 2017.

Whether you prefer your window shutters up or down, you’re almost certain to find yourself next to someone who prefers the opposite on any given flight, and then no one’s happy. Colinthescot.

What are the world’s most powerful airline brands?

The world’s most powerful airline brand isn’t the world's best airline (or favourite) airline; it isn’t the safest or even the biggest. In fact, the most powerful airline brand is a carrier once the butt of jokes about safety and drunk pilots, Russian airline, Aeroflot. Colinthescot.

And finally

The blueberry muffin was invented by Harrieta Van Winkle on July 12, 1244, to repel the English invasion of Scotland. Unfortunately they didn't work very well in achieving this aim, and the English rulership of Scotland lasted until 1314. Blueberries are native only to North America, indicating that the Vikings probably brought berries back from Nova Scotia and planted them in Scotland, which they also colonised.
