Join the Sisterhood for a Lord Howe Island Escape

Lord Howe Island is a tiny Australian island in the Tasman Sea east of Port Macquarie. It's characterised by sandy beaches, subtropical forests and clear waters. In the south, a trail winds up soaring Mount Gower, with sweeping views. Ned's Beach in the north has calm fish- and coral-rich waters. The island is home to seabird colonies, including masked boobies. This is a pristine Island of great beauty. Visitors can relax as walking is the common experience to see much of the scenery. If you prefer to hire a bicycle the roads are almost traffic free to allow safe exploring. The water is crystal clear and around every corner is an amazing photo opportunity. More at Colinthescot

British Airways stops the recline!!

British Airways has made a decisive move to end the horrors of the inflight Legroom Wars by introducing non-reclining seats in its new 35 Airbus A320neos and A321neos, the UK Telegraph has reported. More at Colinthescot

Emirates orders 36 more Airbus A380s

I just love the Jumbo Jet. It's a boy thing I know but the Boeing 747 just does it for me. I also love the Spitfire and the A380. Worlds apart!! But while most airlines are going for the smaller twin engine aircraft such as the Dreamliner, Emirates has paid a whopping $58.7 billion for 20 firm orders and 16 options. More at colinthescot

United's awesome new flight path takes off

United Airlines has just started a new flight into Australia from Houston to Sydney. The airline already operates daily routes from Sydney to Los Angeles and San Francisco and from Melbourne to Los Angeles. All four routes are serviced by the ultra long range 787-9 Dreamliner, which has capacity for 252 passengers and offers 48 business class seats. More at Colinthescot

Join me in Scotland next year

Scotland is a country steeped in history and tradition. The scenery is magnificent and the people are amongst the friendliest on earth (well I had to say this). After walking the West Highland Way many times over the past 23 years it is time to change the itinerary and spend less time walking 22km a day, day after day. So I have put together another itinerary which includes some driving as well as walking and taking in a different part of Scotland. I am focusing on the islands off the west coast, the Inner and Outer Hebrides such as Arran, Skye and Harris. More at Colinthescot

Passport free travel - it's closer than you think

We once spent hours convincing an embassy worker that we were, in fact, the same person in the photo on our license, after weeks of travel that had left us DISHEVELLED, to say the least. Colinthescot

The 20 things we only do on holidays

We all have them. Strange little foibles. Rituals that have become an intrinsic part of any holiday. It doesn't matter if you're visiting somewhere new or the same place you've been to every summer for the last 30 years, if you don't do a certain activity or eat a certain food, it just feels wrong. Like the holiday somehow didn't count. More at Colinthescot

And finally..

Spare a thought for poor ole Michael O’Leary, Chief Executive of Ryanair.
After arriving in a hotel in Edinburgh, he went to the bar and asked for a pint of Guinness.
The barman nodded and said, "That will be £1 please, Mr. O’Leary."
Somewhat taken aback, O'Leary replied, "That's very cheap," and handed over his money.
"Well, we do try to stay ahead of the competition", said the barman. "And we are serving free pints every Wednesday from 6 pm until 8 pm. We have the cheapest beer in Scotland".
"That is remarkable value", Michael comments.
"I see you don't seem to have a glass, so you'll probably need one of ours. That will be £3 please."
O'Leary scowled, but paid up.
He took his drink and walked towards a seat. "Ah, you want to sit down?" said the barman. "That'll be an extra £2. You could have pre-booked the seat, and it would have only cost you £1."
"I think you may be too big for the seat sir, can I ask you to sit in this frame please".
Michael attempts to sit down but the frame is too small and when he can't squeeze in, he complains "Nobody would fit in that little frame".
"I'm afraid if you can't fit in the frame you'll have to pay an extra surcharge of £4 for your seat sir".
O'Leary swore to himself, but paid up. "I see that you have brought your laptop with you" added the barman. "And since that wasn't pre-booked either, that will be another £3."
O'Leary was so incensed that he walked back to the bar, slammed his drink on the counter, and yelled, "This is ridiculous, I want to speak to the manager".
"I see you want to use the counter," says the barman, "that will be £2 please."
O'Leary's face was red with rage. "Do you know who I am?"
"Of course I do Mr. O'Leary."
"I've had enough! What sort of a Hotel is this? I come in for a quiet drink and you treat me like this. I insist on speaking to a manager!"
"Here is his e-mail address, or if you wish, you can contact him between 9.00 am and 9.01am every morning, Monday to Tuesday at this free phone number. Calls are free, until they are answered, then there is a talking charge of only £1 per second, or part thereof".
"I will never use this bar again".
"OK sir, but do remember, we are the only hotel in Scotland selling pints for £1."
