From my desk in the office

Hello <<First Name>>

Now back at my office desk after visiting Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Scotland, Dubai and Malaysia. Lots of churches, mountains, rain, wind, cycling, good wine and adventure.

Unfortunately next Friday (26th October) I have to change the view from my desk yet again! Intrepid Travel is taking a few travel consultants to Egypt to inspire them. A bit of luck was on my side and I have to go. I know I know!!

And seeing I am over there I might as well pop over to Vienna for a few nights and see my brother. Back in the office 9 November.

You can email me or text me as usual but I won't be answering calls.

If anything urgent please call Phil in the office 03 9670 7252 or email him on info@toptentreks.com.au. And copy me in.

The cities with the most bars

Using TripAdvisor data, Alpha Travel Insurance has created an interactive global map that shows the towns that have the highest number of bars. Topping the list, unsurprisingly is London, with 1,327 bars. Next up is Japanese capital, Tokyo, which has 955 bars, followed by New York City with 875 bars. Rounding out the top six are Madrid (865), Prague (601) and Berlin (596). Details at Colinthescot

Tourists will soon be able to visit Palmyra

Once one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world, the historic site was occupied by ISIS up until last year, leading to the destruction of temples, columns and the Arch of Triumph. Now, Syrian authorities have said they hope visitors will be able to reenter the ancient city as soon as summer 2019. More at colinthescot

With great travel comes great responsibility

Since our very first days as a tour operator, responsible business has been at the heart of what we do. Intrepid is committed not just to treading lightly, but to making a real difference – by investing in local communities, human rights initiatives, wildlife conservation projects and the environment. Cycling in Mongolia

In our Mongolia adventure, we learn from three NGOs that are all connected with the reality of life, faced by Mongolia’s herders in the 21st century. In tourism, Mongolia is frequently sold as a stereotype (nomads and a way of life untouched since Ghengis Khan). This idealised, or even romanticised view is far from the harsh reality and challenges faced by local herders. Social Cycles will take you on a journey to interact and connect with local Non Government Organisations (NGOs) to find out more about this lifestyle, the opportunities they have and the challenges they must overcome. Four dates in 2019. More at Colinthescot

Scotland with me

Last week I was cycling up the Outer Hebrides, purely for research purposes of course. Although I was on a bike, the trip next year is all about day walks from our base on various islands. More at Colinthescot

Help solve the Plastic Water Bottle Problem

Plastic water bottles are causing a problem to our environment and as the vast majority end up in landfill we need to ask why we buy them.  I use a re-usable bottle and steralize my tap water with the UV from a Steripen (www.paddypallin.com.au/steripen.html). The PETs in plastics don't biodegrade so we should not be buying water in plastic bottles. More at Colinthescot

Don't just see the world. Make it better!

Planet Earth is an amazing place, but it’s far from perfect. Since the very beginning, G Adventures has operated under the belief that travel is an exchange, not a commodity. As a social enterprise, the planet is our product. Its social and environmental welfare is fundamentally important to us – not just as a business, but as human beings, too. When you travel with us, you’re giving back as much – if not more – than what you take away, often in ways you’d never expect. More at Colinthescot

And finally..

A little boy comes running into the room and says, "Grandpa! Grandpa! Can you make a sound like a frog?" The Grandpa says, "I don't know, why?"

The little boy says, "Because grandma says as soon as you croak, we can go to Disneyland!"
