EPA Newsletter

24th September 2016
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The schoolyear has started in all our members' countries by now, so it's time to wish you a happy new year. Hopefully you had a relaxing summer and now you are eager to participate in EPA activities. You will have a number of occasions for that in the next couple of months.

This summer, as well as the months before, and most probably the months to come are turbulent, with probably a larger number of global and European challenges than we would find comfortable. While we still don't know what Brexit will mean to average Europeans, all conscious parents are keeping a cautious eye on the forthcoming elections in the USA. At the same time some European countries will also have political events, for example a referendum in Hungary and elections in Austria, that are very likely to have a major effect on the lives of children and their parents in Europe. We can only hope citizens will vote for Europe, but at the same time it is absolutely obvious that there is a need to talk about the Europe we want and would like our children to grow up in. This is why we take the opportunity of our forthcoming conference on 18/19 November in Sevilla to talk about active European parenting. Check your mailbox and register by 7 October if you haven't done yet.

The European Day of Parents and Schools, this year on 11 October, is also approaching very quickly. EPA has initiated a European awareness raising campaign using the social media hashtag #ParentsAndSchools on this occasion. Read our call for action and join the campaign by uploading your own video. Don't worry about technology, my own was made with my smartphone, in 3 minutes. If you have problems uploading, Luca is happy to help you (

With the Autumn GA in Sevilla approaching I would like to take this last opportunity to remind everybody who wishes to submit an application for the ALCUIN Award that you only have until 30 September to apply. We would also appreciate to receive all pending membership fees before the GA

I hope to see most of you in Sevilla in November, and wish everybody an active Autumn to promote active parenting. Newsflashes on your national events and hot topics are welcome as always. The EPA Board has a number of interesting invitations, it will be worth following our reports on the EPA blog.

Best wishes,

Eszter Salamon

Seeds for Integration

New large-scale programmes are being developed and carried out to support migrants' inclusion by a group of EU-level organisations, EPA being one of them. One of the partners, OBESSU, in order to encourage building bridges between migrant children and their peers in secondary schools, decided to launch the project Seeds for Integration. Read more here. We are asking EPA members to disseminate the information to secondary school students

Civil society coalition for a new Europe

177 civil society organizations and trade unions have adopted a common position demanding leaders fight back against populism, EPA among them. The initiative was a joint effort of Concorde, ETUC, EYF and WWF and asks the question of what is necessary to build the Europe we want and need. Read more and download the full statement here.

Have your say about the Social Pillar

On 8 March 2016, the European Commission launched its new key initiative in the social field: the European Pillar of Social Rights. There is an ongoing public consultation about the policy proposals until the end of the year. Contribute to the consulation directly or help enrich the EPA contribution. Read the basics here.
