EPA Newsletter 10/2014

5th November 2014
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Welcome to the tenth Newsletter of this year.

October was a very interesting month for EPA. If you have a look at the blog, you will see that we had the opportunity to raise parents voice at a large number of events. This month we received reports from a number of members, too.

It was also a month of discussions and guessing about the new European Commission (EC) and the Commissioners. As you all know, Tibor Navracsics, the Hungarian Commissioner has been given the Education, Sport and Culture portfolio. We hope that the focus of the EC will not change in the field of school education and parents for the period to come. Lifelong Learning and Vocational Education was taken from his portfolio, they belong to Marianne Thyssen, the Belgian Commissioner responsible for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility. This clearly means that we will have to share our efforts between liaising with both areas and at the same time to cooperate more closely with other civil society organisations in both fields. This is something we have started doing recently. We need to join forces to try and shift the focus of the new EC from employability to the common values, the diversity and democratic citizenship for Europe.

The call for the so-called operating grant has just been published. We are doing our best to get financial support from the EC to do the above described job.

We are also preparing for our 30th anniversary in 2015. You can start collecting your memories, documents and achievements for the jubilee as we are doing it for the whole of EPA.

Best wishes,

Eszter Salamon
president
HIGHLIGHTS
from the past month

Forum on the Future Priorities of ET2020
The third annual Education, Training and Youth Forum was held in Brussels on 9th and 10th October. As usual there were about 350 stakeholders in these fields and as usual parents were represented by EPA. The Forum witnessed the farewell of Commissioner Vassiliou who has done a lot during her 5-year assignment and also we heard the encouragingly enthusiastic Silvia Costa, the new President of the CULT Committee of the European Parliament.. Achieving validation of learining outcomes

This conference organised by SOLIDAR Foundation in cooperation with La Ligue de l'enseignement was hosted by Julie Ward, MEP (UK Labour party, S&D Group) in the European Parliament in Brussels on October 14, 2014. Read more here.

Protection of minors in the context of screen convergence
This conference was on Media Convergence, and it took a view of the European regulations, technical solutions and education. The general contents of the conference in Barcelona was not especially focused on parental education and training to face the challenges properly, but on regulatory and technical solutions. We think the focus needs adjustment. Read the report here.
