This is a special edition of the GEN newsletter:

ATHENS – on 13 June The Global Editors Network opened the ninth GEN Summit at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. We kicked off the first day addressing all three challenges: Voice, Visual Journalism and Verification.

Here are three key takeaways from Day 1
  • The push for the voice technology is real and VSO (voice search optimization) could become the new SEO
  • 5G is set to dramatically increase the frequency of and access to mobile reporting, but the fundamentals of reporting and the importance of specialisation remain
  • The complicity of platforms is real, but the media industry might also have to do some soul-searching about how it contributes to the spread of disinformation
Make sure you tune in and follow us on YoutubeTwitter, Instagram or Facebook and check out our interactive videos with automated transcription, powered by Trint, on the GEN Summit website live coverage page.

The Launch

This is how Andreas Dracopoulos, co-President and Director of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, set the tone for the GEN Summit 2019: “in the philanthropy sector as well as in the media we should ask ourselves a question — is our work serving people?
Proud to partner with Trint to offer you interactive videos with automated transcription! Check out their booth at the GEN Expo to learn more.

Fireside Chat with Facebook

The Fireside Chat between Jesper Doub and Matt Kelly was indeed fiery. Kelly and the crowd asked about Facebook's algorithms, its implication in the spread of disinformation and more. Doub said Facebook could not be the solution, but felt responsible to seek new business models to work with publishers.
Don't miss it!

HOW TECHNOLOGY DISRUPTED TRUTH
‘Social media has swallowed the news – threatening the funding of public-interest reporting and ushering in an era when everyone has their own facts. But the consequences go far beyond journalism.’
— Katharine Viner, The Guardian

REUTERS INSTITUTE DIGITAL NEWS REPORT 2019
'This year’s report comes against the backdrop of rising populism, political and economic instability, along with intensifying concerns about giant tech companies and their impact on society.'
— Nic Newman with Richard Fletcher, Antonis Kalogeropoulos & Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, Reuters Institute

FUTURE TODAY INSTITUTE TECH TRENDS REPORT 2019
‘While you cannot solve for future uncertainty, you can prepare your teams
to think strategically using data-driven signals, trends and outcomes.
Focus on connections, not predictions. Doing so will help your organization
get ahead of disruption in order to build your preferred futures.’
 Amy Webb, Future Today Institute

JOHN MICKLETHWAIT ON FUTURE OF NEWS
'I think the delivery of news will get even more targeted. But I still believe a newsroom’s first job is to reflect the world as we see it based on our reporting, rather than tailoring the reporting to suit the audience. Our approach means introducing readers to topics and stories they may not know they’re interested in yet.'
— Interview with John Micklethwait, GEN
