$300M for solar + storage loans and leases in 17 states
  • Oh man, leave it to our friends in Japan to innovate (love that place!). Inverter manufacturer Tabuchi is partnering with the nonprofit Electric & Gas Industries Association on the offering. Loan terms are 1.99% for 10 years and 4.99% for 20 years. States include: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Ohio, Oregon, Minnesota, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Utah. U.S. solar market expanding to less obvious states
  • A new report from Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Tracking the Sun IX, is loaded with great solar market data. About 30% of last year's solar growth is in non-obvious regions such as the Southeast (that's right, y'all), the country of Texas, and even (gulp) the Midwest. Part of the reason: Levelized PPA prices have fallen 75% since 2009. (Source: Herman Trabish at Utility Dive)

Walk the talk â€” Big sustainability conference powered 100% by microgrid
  • The Greenbiz Group's VERGE conference in Silicon Valley next week will put innovation into practice with this microgrid, built on site in just one day: 3.4 kW solar array, four wind turbines at 1 kW, 25 kW biomass gasifier, 125 kW battery storage truck, and 100 kW biodiesel generator acting as a load balancer. Over 1,500 professionals attending, often from the world's largest companies, can get up close and personal with this example of the distributed nature of the world's energy future system. EVs are just like our smart phones

  • The Chevy Bolt is the latest EV to allow system software upgrades "over the air." Just like Tesla did years ago. (Sigh.) This convenience, adaptability, and continuous innovation allowed via this feature add to the list of EV perks. Now let's cross our fingers that these software upgrades don't cause our phones...er...cars to work so differently that we forget how to operate them. (Source: James Ayre from Cleantechnica)

Quotes to live by â€”  Pigs apparently full of wisdom
  • Don't stop reading. Bear with me. (Yep, zoological pun intended.) There are lots of great business quotes about pigs. If you want to cause a little stink (yep, it happened again), bring one of these to your next investment committee meeting. "Never wrestle with pigs. You both get dirty, and the pig likes it.” (George Bernard Shaw). “The difference between involvement and commitment is like ham and eggs. The chicken is involved; the pig is committed.” (Martina Navratilova). “You can put wings on a pig, but you don't make it an eagle.” (Bill Clinton). “Pigs get fat; hogs get slaughtered.” (Unknown).
 
Change vs. trust â€” Sequence matters

  • A wise friend once told me: "Change happens at the speed of trust." So, the next time you're making a pitch or engaging an important stakeholder, consider the relationship between the scale of change you seek, and the depth of trust required. This might make your hours spent on non-business small talk and rapport building feel much more important. (Yep, that wise man is you Don Wells.)
