With the madness of the 7s soon upon us, exacerbated this year by my husband's brother arriving (the crazier one if that's possible...), here are some culinary preparations and distractions for the spectators and rugby widows respectively. Have a great weekend but do please be very wary of large groups of men dressed as bowling pins...
Bagels, schmagels, SCHRAGELS!
The grand daughter of a Jewish deli owner in NYC has started the first New York style bagel bakery in HK which we had the pleasure of test-running last weekend. There are all the traditional flavours plus schmears and 'lox and I can't think of a better way to line your stomach ahead of the rugby... www.schragels.com
Vietnamese Chicken Salad
If you have leftover chicken or other meat/fish from a meal, this is an ideal way to use it up the next day, incorporating my most favourite Asian style dressing.
In my opinion, the winning formula is:
Protein + salad + noodles + Asian dressing + peanuts + chopped coriander.
Within those criteria, you can choose the rest to suit your diet & preferences. Recipe here along with more interesting salads:
Quite honestly, I have been dipping my finger into this ALL DAY LONG! I made it for a piece of salmon at lunchtime, then added to it and tweaked it for a steak in the evening. The latter was possibly more successful as a flavour combination but unfortunately my appetite beat the camera... It is the business! Don't be put off by the anchovies. I know they are a dealbreaker for some. You cannot taste them but they add a salty depth that would otherwise be missing. Use the best olive oil you have. We love the heady green stuff from OliveTreeHK plus that large tin sets off your kitchen rather nicely... Find this and all our fish recipes here.
The Lounge & Bar - 102nd Floor, The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong - Organic Salad Bar
I cannot recommend this place enough for a girly and healthy yet fulfilling and affordable weekday lunch, plus I imagine it's a haven of tranquility away from the noisy 7s! Executive Chef Peter Finds is hot on organic produce, sourcing most veggies from Ecofarm organic farm in the Jianxi province, so the quality and diversity of dishes is high without the subsequent need to be "rolled out" of the restaurant for gluttony! Read my full review here, which is mainly pictorial.
