December 2016 Summary!

Greetings MaSHers and friends!

It's the last letter of 2016, hopefully it's got enough info to keep you all satiated for the next couple weeks.

Thank you Bob for hosting the holiday party! Thank you to Rick for sharing some amazing commercial brews. I’m still having abyssal flashbacks and the sour was amazing. Thanks to everyone who attended and shared brews, food and company.

Election Results are in! Eric was re-elected as Treasurer. Kevin McMahon was elected VP after it was a voting tie. The board did make a choice but opted to see if Jim and Kevin wanted to choose between themselves. They did. Unfortunately for Jim he is not off the hook that easily and will still be a board member.

The quarterly style winner was myself and I also won second place. The third place finish went to Jim Files. This prompted a consideration on multiple entries and awarded prizes. We opted to allow multiple entries by the same person (max of 2) when entries total less than 10. Additionally if a person wins multiple prizes they will only get one, the higher valued, with the forfeited prize going back to the club for future use. The Quarterly Style has gotten its own page on the site and if you’ve placed it will be listed where you finished. If you can provide your recipe to be shared with the club it would be great. The rules have also been posted at the bottom of the page.

Q1 2017 Quarterly Style will be lagers! This is a very broad category and open to whatever lager you want to brew. In this cool time of year most everyone can pull this off thanks to San Francisco Lager yeast and it’s friendliness of working well into the lower 60s but of course it’s happy cooler as well. Naturally most other lager yeasts prefer the cooler temps as well. The only requirement is that a lager yeast must be used and that you can define your beer style per 2015 BJCP guidelines. Discussion in January will be how to avoid off flavors and discussing lager fermenting in general. Google Diacetyl rests before you brew everybody, but that will be covered in the presentation too.

Marin County Fair 2017 – The County has already reached out to the club to run this event again this year. We of course have said yes to this privilege. Please let me know if you’re interested in helping! Even if you only want to work on certain parts there is plenty to do. For example the fair booth decoration, judge organizer, head steward/steward organizer, entry sorting/tracking, etc. There really is plenty to do and it’s a fundraiser for the club.

Upcoming Events:

January meeting – Sours discussion and presentation, new quarterly style (lagers) presentation. NOTE – Given the discussion on sours it’s likely the Q2 QS will be sours! 

2017 Napa Homebrewers Classic! This great event is coming up soon. Plan to enter some brews, assist in judging or just attending.  Full details on the blog  page - Napa Classic Info.

Marinwood Happy Hour Feb 10th 6-9 with local homebrew.  Please let me know if you’d like to serve your homebrew and if so what it will be. I will for sure be donating as well as other local homebrewers.
