No rugby or netball this year

Dear <<First Name>>

Welcome to a brief but important update about Founder's Day plus some odd snippets of news.

Only a week or so ago we thought the rugby and netball were going ahead on Founder's Day but for a number of reasons both have now been cancelled. This means that Founder's Day will start ay 0915 with the service in St Mary's Church and then finish after lunch in the school hall.

If you are coming to lunch, it would be great if you can email Bridget and confirm your attendance along with any special dietary requirements. The cost is £12. plus wine and beer will be available with an honesty bar.

Is this the end of the OT Rugby Fixture?

The OTA versus the School rugby fixture has been an annual event since the 1920s. However last year it was not possible to organise and the same has happened this year.

Originally it was a game between the 1st XV and OT's of any age (and physique!) This undoubtedly led to some bruising encounters but by no means was an OT win guaranteed.

Sadly the changes caused over the years through insurance and RFU safety considerations have watered down the event. The cost of travel, loss of money and at times the role/ quality of the local club(s) have probably also contributed.

The school no longer run several teams at sixth form, they only have a senior squad and so a smaller pool to draw from. Rugby is becoming a sport which you play or you don't at school level. This combined with the calls to make it non compulsory due to the development of the physicality of the players and resulting injuries, make it even harder to sustain numbers.

So, all in all it looks like there simply isn’t the buzz about the OTs matches that there used to be.  Times have moved on, the calls on people's time and efforts are very different and instead of it being 'The Match of the Year' (the BIG ONE, the one to look forward to!!) as in times past, it looks as if its time has past.

If any of our members has any ideas about how to keep rugby going on Founder's Day please drop us a line.
