Futures Steady Before Payrolls; Treasuries Dip: Markets Wrap
6 August 2021
"Stocks in Europe and American equity futures were steady, with the all-important U.S. payrolls data set to take center stage on Friday after a busy week of earnings that pushed equities to record highs. Treasury yields climbed. Contracts on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 were flat and a gauge of dollar strength edged higher. The Stoxx Europe 600 index was little changed amid mixed earnings, after four days of gains set it on course for the best week in three months. HelloFresh SE slumped more than 8% after the online food-services company cut margin guidance. More upbeat results from lender Allianz SE and London Stock Exchange Group Plc helped offset some of the losses." For more information please press here.
Reuters Supply problems cause fall in German industrial output
6 August 2021
"German industrial output unexpectedly fell again in June, data showed on Friday, suggesting recovery is slowing in Europe’s biggest economy, held back by supply bottlenecks for intermediate goods. The Federal Statistics Office said industrial output dropped by 1.3% on the month after a downwardly revised decline of 0.8% in May. A Reuters poll had pointed to a rise of 0.5%. The fall was driven by a drop in the production of capital goods, such as machinery and vehicles, which fell 2.9%, the data showed. Consumer goods output continued to grow, rising by 3.4%." Bloomberg Once Largely Covid Free, Asia Economies Are Now Upended by Delta
6 August 2021
"The delta variant is challenging the part of the world that’s been most successful in blunting the economic impact of Covid-19, with Asian countries that snuffed it out locking down again as the virus returns, and others seeing the world’s highest death rates. Just 12 months ago, the Asia-Pacific region’s rapid containment of Covid-19 made them the envy of the world as the virus ravaged the U.S. and Europe. Now, from Seoul to Sydney, Bangkok to Beijing, authorities are re-imposing growth-sapping restrictions as low vaccination rates in many of those places leave their populations vulnerable." Bloomberg Ether Gains Beat Bitcoin After Network Upgrade
6 August 2021
"Bitcoin’s biggest rival Ether is again pulling away after an upgrade to its underlying network that signals a more constrained supply of the token. The second-largest digital currency touched a two-month high this week, pushing Ether’s gains for the year to some 280%, well ahead of Bitcoin’s 40% advance in the same period after tumbling from a record of almost $65,000 in April. The software upgrade also shows the Ethereum network is well-poised to make further changes that will reduce its energy use substantially, founder Vitalik Buterin said."
