GigHacks Event a Big Success

The first national Gigabit Internet Hackathon drew almost 300 people from 5 cities. Kansas City, San Francisco, Chattanooga, and Burlington participated along with Charlotte over the May 1-3 weekend. Thank you to our local sponsor DC74 Data Centers!

All the participants raved about the speed, running speed tests from their laptops over both wi-fi and Ethernet. Participants formed teams to work on projects over the weekend, culminating in Sunday afternoon presentations before a panel of judges. The Charlotte project team winner was Simuloffice! Google Fiber Hut Plan Filed for Clt - 104

On May 5 the Charlotte Observer broke the story of the Google Fiber hut plan filing for 3820 Ridge Rd, Charlotte, NC 28269. Identified as the Clt - 104 hut, this project consists of installing a new unmanned shelter on a new concrete pad at grade. We are expecting 21 fiber huts to be built around the city, and from what we've been able to gather, this is the first hut plan to be filed.
Thank you to Zach Cardais, Founder of Zeffective, our newest sponsor and a participant at GigHacks.

Spinning Charlotte's Fiber Web

Broadband Communities Community News Editor Marianne Cotter recently moved to Charlotte from California, and is writing a series of articles called Spinning Charlotte's Fiber Web.  Marianne's posts focus on activity that Google Fiber’s announcement has generated to date, and then takes us forward as the city welcomes the build out and the community strives to make the most of it. Please click on the link above and check out her first 3 posts.

We were honored that Marianne participated in Charlotte GigHacks as a judge this year. Welcome to Charlotte Marianne!

Comcast Launches Plan to Take on Gig Internet Providers

Comcast has announced plans for a 2 gbps fiber network in Chattanooga, Tenn., and other select markets in the U.S. But experts are skeptical about its impact.
