Announcing the winner of the Erik Holst MM2017 GA Scholarship!

12 DECEMBER 2016

Dear IFMSA Alumni,
dear Prof. Erik Holst Fund supporters,

logo.fbIt is with great pleasure that we announce the results from the evaluation of all applications for the MM2017 Scholarship, provided by the Prof. Erik Holst Fund to a promising medical student, member of IFMSA, in order to cover some part (if not all) of the expenses for his/her participation at the IFMSA General Assembly – March Meeting 2017 in Montenegro.

We received 94 applications in total, which is a historical record for us, 94 excellent applications from all 5 IFMSA Regions. After a thorough, 2-rounds-long evaluation that lasted a week, we finally reached to the winner, who is:

Ms. Dana SHUBAT from Syria!

Congratulations!

The Board of Directors of the Fund will be in touch with her in the following days in order to arrange properly how the scholarship will be received by its beneficiary.

We would like to take this opportunity and provide you with full details on how the whole evaluation procedure took place, in terms of transparency.

The Fund first announced the call for applications for the scholarship on November 6th, 2016 over the IFMSA General server, Erik Holst Facebook page and erikholstfund.com and provided a timespan of 4 weeks for receiving applications online. The first announcement was also posted on various IFMSA-related Facebook groups, and was followed by 2 reminders as the deadline approached. The deadline for receiving applications expired on December 1st, 2016 at 23:59 (GMT/UTC). The application procedure was done at our website erikholstfund.com by filling in an online application form, which included a CV and a Motivation Letter of each applicant as a prerequisite for application submission. Through these two texts, we would be able to better become acquainted with each candidate and take a thorough look into their aspirations from their possible participation in the GA, their vision of IFMSA and themselves in it, as well as their background and achievements both academic, professional and personal. As the scholarship aims mainly in students who cannot attend the GA due to financial constraints, special attention was given to any relevant information provided by the applicant. Applicants that haven’t attended a GA before, and those who had previously applied for our scholarship programme were also seen in a more favorable way.

After the 1st round of evaluation, a ranking list of all applicants was determined. Then, all applicants were arranged according to IFMSA Region and the first of each Region was chosen, which provided us with a list of 7 finalists in total, because we encountered ties in some Regions. Then, a 2nd round of evaluation followed, starting with these 7 finalists, which led us to the final ranking list that gave the winner of the scholarship.

Finally, we would like to thank once again all those who applied, especially those who made it to the list of the finalists. We are sorry that we could not give more scholarships this time, but hopefully we will be able to do so for the next GA, that is the AM2017! We do encourage all of the applicants to reapply next time, when the call for applications is released! We will be happy to receive your applications once again when time comes!

Check our website erikholstfund.com for more news & updates on the GA Scholarships and other upcoming grants, as we will be enriching its content soon, after the scholarship is received, as we shall be following our grantee Ms. SHUBAT and her experience at the IFMSA GA- MM2017!

Invitation to MM2017 Alumni Sessions in Budva, Montenegro

8 DECEMBER 2016

Dearest IFMSA Alumni,

My name is Omar Cherkaoui, from Morocco, and I am the new IFMSA President for this term 2016/2017.

I am writing you this email to invite you all to the IFMSA March Meeting 2017, but also to emphasize on the particular importance of the two upcoming General Assemblies.

We will be holding Alumni Sessions in the upcoming March Meeting, and we would highly appreciate your participation for the following reasons:
  • IFMSA will be conducting a big Consultation Session with all the participants (around 1000 medical students from over 100 countries) in order to develop our next IFMSA Strategy 2017/2020. With your great experience and institutional memory, we would very much appreciate your input in this process.
  • We will be discussing a reform in our Alumni and Honorary Life Members structure. Obviously, we cannot hold discussions about a reform in these two structures without consulting you and getting your input !
  • IFMSA recently celebrated its 65 years and is now gathering medical students from 130 National Member Organizations (NMOs) and 122 countries. We would very much like this upcoming March Meeting 2017 to be a place for our Alumni to gather, meet again and remember sweet memories of the past.

IFMSA is what brought us once together, and we truly hope you can respond positively to this invitation.

IFMSA GA-MARCH MEETING 2017

The 66th IFMSA General Assembly - March Meeting will take place on March 2-8 2017 in Budva, Montenegro, hosted by MoMSIC. MoMSIC (Montenegrin Medical Sudents International Committee) is a voluntary non-governmental organization, at the Medical Faculty in Podgorica, based on the free connection and association of medical students to achieve common goals. One of our main designs are student exchange.

This March Meeting's theme will be: Organ and tissue donation – donate life.

Becoming an organ and tissue donor is an incredible and noble gift because you can give someone a second chance at life.

Organ and tissue donation saves and improves many lives every year.If more people donated organs and tissue, more lives could be impacted.

Organ and tissue donation is the process of surgically removing an organ or tissue from one person(the organ donor) and placing it into another person (the recipient). Organ transplantation is one of the great advances in modern medicine. Unfortunately ,the need for organ donors is much greater than the number of people who actually donate.

1 ORGAN DONATOR CAN SAVE 8 LIVES

Who can become organ and tissue donor?

– Almost everyone can help others through organ and tissue donation
– The governing factors are where and how a donor dies and the condition of their organs and tissues
– While your age and medical history will be considered, you sholudn`t assume you`re too young, too old or not healthy enough to become a donor.
– All major religions support organ and tissue donation for transplantation
– People can also donate a kidney or part of their liver while they are still alive, though this is usually restricted to those wanting to transform the life of someone they know.

Organs that can be transplanted include the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, intestine and pancreas. Tissues that can be transplanted include heart valves and other heart tissue, bone, tendons, ligaments, skin and parts of the eye such as the cornea or sclera. Being an organ donor is a generous and worthwhile decision that can be a lifesaver. This is where we medical students have the opportunity for our own words to say.We can see things differently, we have to learn and we have to be prepared to take part in any future initiative to build the future we want!
