COVID-19 Updates from Navian Hawaii President & CEO Tori Abe Carapelho

On behalf of the entire Navian Hawaii ohana, we wish you and your loved ones good health and wellness during this challenging, unprecedented time. Amidst the numerous changes and challenges resulting from COVID-19, communication with you—our valued community supporters—becomes more important than ever. With that, I wanted to take time to share some crucial updates on the steps we’ve taken at Navian Hawaii in response to COVID-19.

Our Commitment to Patients Remains the Same
As a community-based non-profit, not a moment has gone by without our team considering ways to fulfill our mission to bring hope, reduce fears, and impact lives. Our clinical team are our frontline heroes who continue to provide quality care and compassionate support for Hawaii’s most vulnerable. Toward this end, we’ve made necessary adjustments to our day-to-day operations, established new safety protocols, and invested in technology that allows us to communicate with patients and their families.
Caring for the Community
In these trying times, we’ve stepped up to support the community in numerous ways. Our licensed counselors, for instance, are stepping up to offer counseling support to families that’ve lost a loved one to COVID-19, healthcare providers and frontline workers who are facing emotional challenges, and families that are enduring complications with their grief in light of home quarantine and social distancing regulations.
How We Continue to Serve
We’re so thankful to have a dedicated team of professionals in all disciplines who are committed to our mission and remain strong and united in the face of struggles and numerous challenges. As a community-based organization, we’re committed to meeting the needs of the local community during these unprecedented times—whether or not they are on our service.
We’re confident that these prudent measures we’ve taken will continue to protect the health and wellbeing of our Navian Hawaii ohana. Thank you for your ongoing support of our organization—we wouldn’t be able to fulfill our mission to bring hope, reduce fears, and impact lives without you as part of our ohana.

About Navian Hawaii

Little Things, Big Differences for the Kahanus

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank each and every one of you who has made a contribution to the Kahanu family through our Little Things, Big Differences program. What began as our way to provide an added layer of support for people who are going through a difficult time has evolved into a robust community giving initiative, inviting people from around the state to get behind each other as they join us in turning dreams into a reality—no matter how “little” they may seem.
Thanks to your incredible support, we were able to provide a variety of “little things” (and a few big things!) to Punualii and Pulikikaua Kahanu, both of who suffer from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare genetic disorder that has made them wheelchair- and bed-bound. These “little things” include:
  • Two air conditioning units for the brothers’ bedrooms – Donated and installed by Lokahi, the Kahanu brothers’ former Muscular Dystrophy Camp leader.
  • Care packages for the Kahanu family (including some of their favorite comics and graphic novels) – Donated by Carol, a mother who was touched by the Kahanu brothers’ story and wanted to offer her support, as her own son suffered from the same condition.
  • Google Play gift cards (to enable the bedbound brothers to download books and activities) – Donated by our very own staff member Wendy Nishimura.

Community Support Amidst COVID-19

During this unprecedented time, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the local community, members of whom have recently donated a variety of PPE for our frontline workers. We are so grateful for and moved by your generosity during such a trying time, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It’s only through your unwavering support that we’re able to keep our team, patients and their families safe.
Mahalo to our amazing volunteers, friends, family members, businesses, organizations, and community supporters for your recent PPE donations. Now more than ever, we need your support. Specifically, we are looking for donations of N95 medical masks, surgical masks, face shields, gloves, and other PPE. To learn more about the many ways you can help our frontline teams or to make a donation, please contact our Marketing Department at (808) 791-8075 or

Planning in Uncertain Times

We are living in unprecedented times, but having a calm and compassionate perspective will help us all get through this crisis. Communities all over the world are thinking about their future and what it may hold. It is at times like this when we want control over the uncontrollable.
Many of our friends and supporters have rediscovered what is truly important to them and want to take steps to turn that discovery into action. Whether it is making sure their loved ones are cared for or allocating their assets in a way that is most meaningful, putting an estate plan in place need not be complicated. If Navian Hawaii is part of your future plans, we can help you get started.

We’re so grateful to have a super team of nurses who provide invaluable care for our patients and their families.  And thank you to all of the hardworking frontline heroes who sacrifice their own health every day to care for the most vulnerable members of our community. United together, we are a strong front in the fight against COVID-19.
