From Family Support Service Inc --

Nowra Family Support Service is seeking support letters for an application for funding to be able to run a group for families who have been exposed to domestic and family violence.  The group will work with non-violent parent/carers and the children in their care.
The group will be based on an accredited program which has been fully evaluated and meets FACS requirements for groups to be evidence based.  FACS definition of evidence based programs are those defined as:
·       Best research evidence
·       Best clinical experience and,
·       Are consistent with family and client values.
The group will be conducted by experienced, trained workers who are trauma informed and have undertaken recent domestic violence training and, in particular, it’s impact on children.
As a service provider, do you identify this type of group as a gap in service and an identified need for the Shoalhaven?  If you agree, please send by attachment in a return email, a letter stating the identified need, gap in service and your support of this application.
Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.  The letters of support need to be forwarded to Nowra Family Support Service Inc. by March 18, 2015. See letter for contact details.
From Family Law Registry, Wollongong;

The Wollongong registry was recently refurbished and this entailed putting in a specific safe room, rather than the clients using our conference room.

As before, when any matter comes before the Court and the client feels they may be intimidated by the other party or they have an AVO/DVO in place (or expired), the party or their solicitor (or in some cases SHLV) write to us and request the use of the safe room.
An example is as follows ;

Name of client:
File number:
Contact number for client:
Date plan developed:
DVO  (is it current):
Copy provided to the court:
Date expires:
Next event:
 Date of event:

Nature of concern:

It should also be requested if the client would also like an escort.

Access is now by swipe, therefore entry to the room should only be made with security assistance.

Previously, solicitors were knocking on the door and the clients were letting them in unseen, which posed huge ramifications if a client let in the wrong person.

There has since been a peep hole installed and cameras will also be installed. We ask that the clients do not open the door to anyone. It endangers everyone in the safe room.

There have also been issues with some solicitors abusing the use of the safe room and trying to use it as an advantage, rather than for it's proper purpose.

The Proposed Uniform CPD Rules Explained

The Legal Profession Uniform Law is expected to come into operation in New South Wales and Victoria in mid-2015. The Uniform Law will replace the Legal Profession Act 2004 in each of those jurisdictions, as well as regulations and rules made under those Acts. Under the proposed law, harmonisation of regulatory obligations is a key objective, including continuing professional development requirements. - See here for more information.

Free Legal Advice Clinics for Women in BEGA

The Women’s Resource Centre is supporting Shoalcoast Community Legal Centre to provide free legal advice clinics for women in the Shire.

The South East NSW Women’s Legal Service provides the assistance through the Shoalcoast Community Legal Centre, a not-for profit, community managed free legal service. The program is available to women in the Bega Valley Shire and can offer advice in most non-commercial areas of law. The clinics have been running for some time, but a pilot program promoting the service has just commenced to encourage more women to access the service, and Skype appointments will now be available from the Women’s Resource Centre. Additionally Shoalcoast is looking for partnership venues with technology in Bermagui, Merimbula and Eden.
