Letter from the President

With the end of the year quickly approaching, it’s a great time to reflect and look ahead. What do we have to be grateful for, and how can we share our thanks with the world? One of the things I am most grateful for is my experience in the Peace Corps. I love being able to share my perspective with those I meet, encouraging them to see the world in a different way. I think this is a particularly important time for us to continue sharing these experiences, and to further Peace Corps’ mission however we can.

At the holiday party on December 8, you will have a chance to help further this mission by participating in our silent auction, which raises funds to support local and international projects. It’s also a great way to get caught up on your holiday shopping! There are some truly great finds: local attractions, international artifacts, unique experiences, and more!

So that we have plenty of time to enjoy a delicious meal and each other’s company, the silent auction will only be open from 11am to noon, so arrive early and ready to shop.

We can’t wait to celebrate our biggest event of the year with you!

In peace,

Celeste Coleman, Ukraine (2005-2007)
SDPCA President

SDPCA Annual
Holiday Party, Silent Auction, and Potluck!

Saturday, December 8 from 11am to 2pm
San Diego First Church of the Brethren
3850 Westgate Place San Diego, CA 92105

Please plan to join us for our biggest event of the year!  This is a great opportunity to enjoy delicious food, shop, and (re)connect with local Returned Peace Corps Volunteers.

Kids are welcome.

Here's what to expect:
Silent Auction:  Enjoy shopping for unique gifts, fun experiences, and tickets/gift certificates to local attractions and restaurants. The silent auction raises funds to support projects of Peace Corps Volunteers as well as our local community service projects. See list of local businesses that donated to the silent auction:   The Silent Auction is from 11am to noon only.  Peace Corps Calendars will also be for sale.  Cash, check, or credit cards accepted.

An amazing meal and fun program! The food will be delicious, of course, because all of us are the cooks! What dish will you bring? As always, there is an appreciation for dishes from your country of service but any special dish is welcome!  There will also be an interactive, fun, and not-too-long program.

International Support Fund Vote:  Each year we raise funds to support projects of currently serving Peace Corps Volunteers. Help us choose which project to support!  Learn more about our International Support Fund.

New Sock Drive for Asylum Seekers:  Bring a pack (or two) of new men’s, women’s, or children’s socks. As asylum seekers are processed through our border and released from detention, they end up at a shelter coordinated by the Rapid Response Network for a short stay until they can make arrangements for their next destination.  One of the most requested items is socks. 50 to 100 new people arrive at the shelter each day and as you can imagine, there is an endless need for socks.
Don't forget to RSVP so we'll know how many people will be there:  We look forward to celebrating with you!

North County Hike – Elfin Forest
Wednesday, January 2 from 9 to 11am (or so)
Elfin Forest Recreational Reserve
8833 Harmony Grove Road, Escondido, CA 92029

Welcome the New Year with a spectacular hike at the beautiful Elfin Forest Reserve! We'll pass over a creek from the Escondido watershed, head uphill* to some overlooks with great views of the area. From there, we can continue on any of the 11 miles of hiking trails or head back down the mountain through the botanical trail.
*The first part of the hike is all uphill with plenty of zig zags so it's a bit of a climb but it doesn't last too long. And it's all downhill on the way back!
We'll meet at the parking lot trail head. Friends, partners, leashed dogs are all welcome! Wear good walking shoes and bring plenty of water. Snacks and a walking stick encouraged.
