Letter from the President

I hope you had a wonderful Peace Corps Week! This year, we celebrated Peace Corps Week from February 24 through March 2. This special week commemorates President Kennedy’s establishment of the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961. During this annual event, the Peace Corps community celebrates all the ways that Peace Corps makes a difference at home and abroad and renews its commitment to service. This is an excellent time for each of us to reflect on the differences we are making in our local communities, and renew our own commitments to service.

For those who attended, I hope you enjoyed the third annual Taste the World event, a delicious way to celebrate friendship across cultures and cap off Peace Corps week!

Later this month, we have some more great events for you to enjoy. On Wednesday, March 20, come relax and socialize at a happy hour at Hillcrest Brewing Co., or join us on Saturday, March 23 for a day of volunteering at Door of Faith Orphanage in Baja. We hope to see you very soon!

In Peace,

Celeste Peacock-Coleman
SDPCA President

Advocacy Corner
NPCA’s National Day of Action
February 28th was the National Peace Corps Association’s National Day of Action on Capitol Hill. Advocates from all over the country gathered to meet with members of Congress to urge support for increased funding for Peace Corps and to cosponsor the Respect for Peace Corps Volunteers Act, HR 1411.
The SDPCA is one of many affiliate groups across the nation that will be hosting events from February through April to advocate for the Peace Corps. We had postcards for people to sign and send to Congress at our Taste the World event on Saturday, March 2nd. More postcard signing opportunities will be available at upcoming events.
Please show your support by taking five minutes to contact your members of Congress.
Refugee Advocates Call on Congress to Restore the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program
The SDPCA was one of eight affiliate Peace Corps chapters, among many other supporters, that signed on to a letter that urged the 116th Congress to allow more refugees to resettle in the U.S. See the full letter and list of groups that signed on here.
