Save the Date for the SDPCA Holiday Party on Dec 10th!

Dear SDPCA and friends:

It's officially fall, which means that winter is right around the corner!  Of course, for SDPCA, that means it is time to save the date for our annual holiday party - December 10th.  We have many events between now and then but the holiday party is our biggest event of the year. The party features an international potluck lunch and silent auction fundraiser.  The proceeds of our silent auction go to our International Support Fund, and are used to fund projects for currently serving PCVs. The venue will again be at the Church of the Brethren. We hope to see even more members and their families this year!
Please help by donating items and coming prepared to bid on some, as well. Remember, this is a great time to buy presents for loved ones!  We will also have 2017 Peace Corps calendars for sale. If you would like to donate an item to the silent auction, please contact Lynne Graham at or at 760 460 1064. Hope to see you there!

The questions asked will deal with intercultural communication and “culture shock”. Questions such as: How did serving in the Peace Corps help to develop your intercultural communication skills? How did getting out of your comfort zone while serving in the Peace Corps impact your intercultural communication skills? How have you applied what you learned in your current career? Anecdotes, personal stories, and tangents are welcomed!

Recipe: Sticky Rice and Mango (Thailand)

Sticky rice and mango is a well loved dessert in Thailand (and in Thai restaurants). This crowd-pleaser is not hard to make but some planning is required.  Here are the steps:
  • Buy Sticky Rice at an Asian Supermarket. It is sometimes called Sweet Rice or Glutinous Rice.
  • Soak 1.5 cups of rice in cold water (covered by 2 inches of water) for at least three hours.
  • Drain the rice and transfer to a cheese cloth lined bamboo steaming basket or other container that can can be suspended over boiling water (Photo: Thais have a special contraption for steaming sticky rice).
  • Fill pot with several inches of water and place steaming basket in/over the pot so the rice is at least 1 inch above the water. Fold the cheese cloth over the rice and then cover with a damp kitchen towel.
  • Bring the water to a rolling boil and steam for 30-45 minutes, adding hot water as necessary to not burn off the water.
  • When the rice is almost done, combine two cups of unsweetened coconut milk, 1 cup of sugar, and 2 teaspoons of salt in a saucepan. Stir to combine and bring to a gentle boil.  Stir again and remove from heat.
  • When the rice is done, transfer to a large bowl and stir in the coconut mixture.
  • Cover and set aside to cool for one hour.
  • Serve at room temperature with slices of mango or other fruit.

Advocating for Peace Corps - September 22

A dedicated group of activists met to let our representatives in Washington know how important continued and increased funding for Peace Corps is to us. We wrote letters, made phone calls, ate and drank, socialized. Thank you, Sarah and Niels, for opening your home to us.  At the same time many RPCVs were in DC for the NPCA Connect conference celebrating the 55th anniversary of Peace Corps. They were on the hill meeting with politicians on this same issue.

If you weren't able to attend, you can add your voice RIGHT NOW:

1) Email your representative:
  • Go to:,
  • Click on advocate at the top
  • Find your representative
  • Send the scripted letter NPCA has created to your Congressional representative.
2) Call your Senators and use this script:

Boxer - Call 202 224 3553:
On this 55th Anniversary of the Peace Corps, thank you for your efforts to introduce new legislation to support Returned Peace Corps Volunteers facing challenges from service related injuries or illness. Please enter this legislation before the end of the year.

Feinstein - Call 202 224 3841
On this 55th Anniversary of the Peace Corps, thank you for your past leadership in sponsoring a Peace Corps funding letter each March, urging increased funding for the agency. Please continue to introduce this letter to the 115th Congress.

So easy and very effective. Please take this action today!
