Letter from the President

Dear SDPCA members,

Happy fall! It’s the perfect time of year to cozy up to those we care about. What better way to do that than at an SDPCA event? Camp in the beautiful mountains of North County, sharpen your skills at a storytelling workshop, or come support your fellow RPCVs who are telling their stories.  We are lucky to be able to spend purposeful time together in such a beautiful part of the world!

Also peeking over the horizon is our upcoming holiday party, our biggest event of the year—save the date for Saturday, December 8th. It will be another wonderful chance to socialize, enjoy some amazing international dishes, and raise money for our International Support Fund which goes to fund projects of currently serving Volunteers.

We are looking forward to seeing you soon! And keep in touch—if you have any SDPCA-related questions, comments, or ideas, you can send them to me at and I will make sure they get to the right person.

In Peace,

Celeste Peacock-Coleman
SDPCA President

Storytelling Workshop
Friday, October 12 from 6:30 to 9:30pm
Colleen Garret’s House in Spring Valley

It's time to work on our 3rd goal and bring the world back home. What better way to do this than by learning to tell our stories. This workshop will help you develop your story telling skills. Our goal is to learn and then practice telling our stories to an audience of our friends and peers at the SDPCA story slam on Saturday October 27th.

Come prepared with your unique experiences to learn to share stories of your service, or of your life before or since service. Our unique perspective and experience as RPCVs makes us a special font of knowledge and learning opportunities.

This event will be held in the home of SDPCA member Colleen Garrett. Please RSVP so that she can send you parking instructions for her little neighborhood.
Palomar Mountain Campout!
Palomar Mountain State Park

Two Part RSVP:

  2. Pay $10 per adult through our secure PayPal Link
It's that time of year again to head to the hills! Join us for our annual SDPCA Campout this time at Palomar Mountain State Park. We will spend two nights camping - and can plan meals, hikes, etc once we get an idea of who is coming. Each camper will be asked to pay $10 to offset costs of firewood, campground fees, etc.

There's only room for 15 so those first to respond and pay will be included on the camper list.  Look forward to seeing you there! Please let us know if you need to borrow any camping gear.

Just a short 1.5 hour drive from San Diego, the park is off Highway 76, up Highway S-6, then left on Highway S-7 at the junction near the mountaintop.  We have Cedar Grove Group Camp 3 under the name Sarah Thorwirth.

On September 24th the United States Senate unanimously voted to give final approval for Peace Corps Health & Safety Legislation (HR 2259). The bill is now off to the President to sign. Thank you to all the advocates who pushed for the passage of this important piece of legislation.  Read more here.
Elections are right around the corner! Now is a great time to start building relationships either in person or via social media with candidates running for office. Let them know that Peace Corps is an important issue to you and share your personal experience.
Help advocate for Peace Corps! We are planning to set up in-person district meetings with Susan Davis’ office and Juan Vargas’ office this fall. Also, we are looking for someone to be an Area Advocacy Coordinator for the 50th District. Contact Danielle at if you have any questions or are interested in attending your district’s meeting so that we can be sure to keep you posted about the meeting dates and details.
