Dear SDPCA and friends,

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend, Gregg Pancoast.  Many of you probably knew Gregg and know what an amazing person he was.  You can read more below.

As we enter our holiday season 2015, please remember the SDPCA when you are in a giving mood.  Our annual silent auction at the holiday party will gladly include your donated items.  Maybe you have some trinkets from your country of service or other travels that you are ready to part with.  The money raised from the auction goes toward our International Support Fund (ISF) which supports volunteer projects in the field. 2016 membership starts on January 1 - don't forget to renew online or at the holiday party!

See you all soon,
Heather Ginsky, President
Gregg Pancoast
Costa Rica, 1985-86

Gregg Pancoast, board member of the San Diego Peace Corps Association since 2001, died suddenly on September 18, 2015, creating a huge loss for our community.   His friendly company was present at nearly every event. Gregg enjoyed meeting recently returned RPCVs and socializing with long time friends.

Gregg was caring, had a wonderful sense of humor, and lived life fully.  He was passionate about traveling to Baja, practicing yoga, and playing bridge. Gregg worked as the controller at the Natural History Museum. A single father, he left behind his beloved daughter, Sofia, who is a  junior at Regis University in Denver. His work place set up a fund to help Sofia. If you would like to contribute,

Gregg is greatly missed.

Day at the Bay
Day at the Bay is one of our most popular events and 2015 was no exception!  On September 12, about 30 SDPCA members, friends, and family got together at Tidelands Park in Coronado for some fun in the sun!  A big thanks to those who arrived early to secure a space and set up shade tents for our group.  We enjoyed some food and drinks, games, and voted to fund a new ISF project.  Another successful SDPCA event on the books!
Survivors of Torture International Tour
On Thursday, September 24, nearly 20 RPCVs met at Survivors of Torture International (SOTI) to learn about the incredible work they do here in San Diego.  Many refugees, asylees, and other immigrants have suffered state sponsored torture in their homeland and are in need of SOTI's therapeutic services to heal and find the strength to move forward.  After the tour, many of our group went to dinner at Coyote Cafe to debrief.

Camping Trip
Around 25 of us headed east into the desert heat to get even warmer in the hot springs during our annual camping trip - this year at Agua Caliente County Park near Ocotillo, CA. We gathered at the group caravan site hugged up against some low rocky hills on the edge of the wild beyond.  Within walking distance were 3 different soaking pools - one cold, one hot and one just right.  We had a lovely evening when the sun went down - sharing appetizers, wine and beer as we wandered in and out of the hot springs.  Once the fire was lit and the stars came out, people gathered to swap stories.
Five kids joined our group which added to the adventure and fun of it all.  The next morning, after a very windy night's sleep and some coffee, people went hiking, some went back for a soak, and everyone said farewell and headed home. Hope to see you next year for this truly enjoyable experience - and don't forget your sleeping bag!!
Ronald McDonald House
On the afternoon of October 17, a group of 17 volunteers composed of RPCVs, friends and family made life just a little easier for 150 parents and siblings of hospitalized children at the Ronald McDonald House. Hot, nutritious meals give these exhausted and overwhelmed families the chance to relax and connect with others who understand what they're going through.

We worked in the kitchen and serving area from 10am- 2pm to prepare a salad bar and soup lunch for the crowd. We can’t wait to go back again in April!
