Hello and Happy Summer,  SDPCA members!

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Heather Ginsky. I served as a Youth Development Volunteer in Peru from 2010-11 and I am your new SDPCA President!  The 2015-16 Board of Directors met recently to plan for the upcoming year.
Click here to see the many events planned!  I look forward to seeing you at our events.

We have set several goals for the upcoming year:
  • create a new database/distribution list
  • vary our community service events to include cross border projects
  • increase membership and participation
  • improve our International Support Fund outreach efforts
  • create a database of the delicious restaurants where we have hosted ethnic dinners!
Additionally, as we move forward, we will continue to grow and keep up in the evolving world in which we live.  As always, we welcome any comments and feedback as your participation is how we thrive as an organization.

Peace, and see you soon!

Geo Quiz

Q. Where is Wat Arun (aka the Temple of Dawn)?   The answer is somewhere in this newsletter.
Oven Project in Nicaragua
Nicaragua PCV Mariel Stotts was funded by the SDPCA International Support Fund in December 2014 to  replace 12 inefficient wood-fueled ovens currently in use by women entrepreneurs with an improved and more efficient design.  She actually constructed 15 fuel efficient ovens!!

At the Country Round Up in May, SDPCA members voted to fund two more projects:  Madagascar Reforestation Efforts for $500.72 and Nicaragua Efficient Stove Project for $270.13.
The San Diego Peace Corps Association donated $300 to the Ebola Relief Fund administered by the National Peace Corps Association.  This is 15% of the funds raised at the SDPCA holiday party in December.

Country Round Up and Annual Meeting
On Saturday, May 9, SDPCA held its annual meeting at the ranch of SDPCA member Elizabeth Vaughn (THANK YOU!) with a Country Round Up theme. There was a scavenger hunt, a delicious potluck, and the now traditional Geo Quiz.   A
new board of directors was elected and members chose two new projects to support through the SDPCA International Support Fund.  A great time was had by all.  Click here to view a photo album from the day.
WWOOFing Day
On Saturday morning, June 6, 10 RPCVS and friends gathered in a residential area in Point Loma. Our intent was to learn and participate in what is known as WWOOFing (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farming).  Our hostess, Soiree Leone, met us in the front yard and pointed out that it is part of her organic garden.

Garden Gathering in Oceanside
An SDPCA gathering took place on Saturday, June 6 at the home of Kaye Thompson (RPCV-Lesotho).  Kaye’s beautiful patio-garden setting, tables filled with an array of delicious snacks, salads and beverages and the camaraderie of twelve RPCVs were the ingredients for a fun-filled afternoon.
Bob Braaton, RPCV-Guatemala, shared information about the work of “San Diego 350”, a volunteer organization concerned about climate change and its effects on our livelihoods, well-being and the future of our children.   An energetic walk to the end of the pier and along the beach on a beautiful summer night was the perfect ending to a lively SDPCA event.
Answer:  Wat Arun is located along the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, Thailand. It is the temple in the photo for the event at Hostelling International.  Learn more about Wat Arun.
