Updates on COVID-19 & MOHS' Plan
MOHS' Emergency Response Plan Updates
A summary of MOHS' updated response plan is available here. As part of its expanding efforts to address the urgent threat of COVID-19, MOHS continues to partner with homeless service providers, health officials, and public and private agencies to implement a range of prevention and response strategies to support and protect individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Baltimore City. May you wish to learn more about current interventions, please visit our COVID-19 Webpage.

Cases of COVID-19 in our Community 
As of today, 32 people experiencing homelessness in our community have tested positive for COVID-19, including 28 individuals from Baltimore Station and 4 individuals from the Convalescent Care Program at the Weinberg Housing and Resource Center (WHRC). In both instances, MOHS was notified of initial positive test results by homeless service providers and immediately convened with the Health Department to create and execute a plan to move all individuals from those units to an isolation site and test all the residents and staff. Among those who tested positive, most did not have symptoms related to COVID-19.

Prior to these two locations, no positive cases of COVID-19 among residents in emergency shelter or congregate homeless service programs had been reported to us. All staff and residents have been notified and MOHS, in partnership with BCHD and other stakeholders, such as Healthcare for the Homeless (HCH), took additional steps this morning by facilitating testing and self-isolation for the remaining staff and residents of WHRC. While there were no known cases among the remaining residents and staff, MOHS  and BCHD determined that testing and isolating everyone was the most appropriate response in this instance. MOHS will continue to work closely with service providers, health officials, and public and private agencies to prevent and respond to infections. 

General Updates 
As of today,16,616 individuals have tested positive for COVID-19 in the State of Maryland, including 1728 individuals in Baltimore City. Given testing limitations, actual case number is expected to be much higher. Black Marylanders are impacted disproportionately according to data released by The Maryland Health Department, and experts have predicted that COVID-19 could attack Baltimore City the hardest. The State of Maryland coronavirus tracking map is available here and is updated throughout the day as additional details on cases are released by individual counties.

MOHS Outreach Team
They go above and beyond to meet the needs of the most vulnerable members of our community. They are our heroes. We are so proud of them and we can't thank them enough for their service. We want to take a moment to thank and recognize the efforts of every member of our very own outreach team. The team has been working around the clock to ensure that our neighbors who are unsheltered are protected and fed during the pandemic. We salute them for their dedication and are inspired by their eagerness to support or neighbors experiencing homelessness.

Baltimore Donation Hub 

Special Thank You to Baltimore Donation Hub for dropping off 40 face shields donated by Open Works Baltimore and a bunch of contact-precaution ponchos (from an anonymous donor) for people experiencing homelessness who have been moved to hotels and isolation sites. Baltimore Donation Hub is a Baltimore City COVID-19 infection-control supply centralization service that allows for equitable distribution of supplies to non-medical essential front-line service providers who meet the needs of the most vulnerable Baltimoreans. It is run by a team of public health professionals, community members, nonprofit organizations, and public service agencies. You can donate to take part in this initiative by using this link.

Employment plays a key role in preventing and ending homelessness.

Hence, improving access to employment and economic opportunities is one of our five key strategies to make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring. A summary of the Continuum of Care's Action Plan on Homelessness is available here.

MOHS is  Hiring!
As part of its response to COVID-19, MOHS is expanding capacity for social distancing in shelters by opening additional emergency shelter sites to relocate existing shelter residents and allow for social distancing in accordance with CDC best practices. Hiring additional staff members is of paramount importance for the success of this strategy. Below are new contract positions managed by the Mayor's Office of Homeless Services. 
  • Case Manager - APPLY HERE
    • The Case Manager role will be supporting MOHS’ efforts to provide on-going support to homeless citizens over the age of 62 moved into these designated sites. The Case Manager provides direct management services including identifying and coordinating community resources. The Case Manager provides a variety of individual and/or group supportive services that address both short-term and long-term client needs.
  • Shelter Monitor - APPLY HERE
    • The Shelter Monitor will be responsible for providing a safe and orderly environment at the site. During your shift, you will be responsible for enforcing program rules and regulations, performing intake process and log entries, addressing client behavior issues and conflict resolution, and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the site. 
Resources for Workers Impacted by COVID-19
Accessing DSS Public Benefits During COVID-19 (information current as of 4/24/20)
This website provides important information and updates on service modifications at the Department of Social Services and access to public benefits during COVID-19.  Individuals may call the Homeless Persons Representation Project (HPRP) for free legal information.
Bilingual SNAP Telephone Hotline (information current as of 4/24/20)
Catholic Charities of Baltimore has launched a bilingual SNAP telephone hotline to assist those in needs with SNAP applications. Help is available through the the bilingual SNAP hotline: 667-600-2291 between 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday. Benefit Counselors are also available at 867-322-6657 or 443-885-9707 to assist with additional benefits. See flyer for more details.

Grab and Go Food Distribution Sites 
Baltimore City is providing grab-n-go meals to all Baltimore children and youth through April 26. All meal sites and additional information can be found here.
