ETS is here to help!

Many exciting changes occurred over the summer including the beginning of the Wheeler Renewal Project, a new classrooms resources system, and the introduction of SuiteC to bCourses. Start your semester off right, and get the information you need before classes start.

Open House. Tuesday August 9, 2016. 11am - 12:30. Dwinelle 127
This fall we are excited to offer faculty, instructors, researchers, and GSI/GSRs a chance to meet with groups across campus who support teaching and research.

On August 9, 2016 join us anytime between 11:00 - 12:30 to learn more about pedagogical and technological resources available to Berkeley instructors, have your questions answered about teaching and research tools available to the campus community. This event will mark the Official Grand Opening of the Academic Innovation Studio.

Classrooms Information System/25 Live

Coming soon! Over the last 18 months, the campus has been working to implement a new Student Information System, Campus Solutions. As an addition to this new system, the Office of the Registrar has implemented a new scheduling tool, 25Live, to assign classrooms to academic sections and to reserve classroom space for one-time room requests for administrative and academic departments

SuiteC in bCourses

Developed by ETS in partnership with Berkeley faculty, SuiteC (formerly Collabosphere) provides bCourses users with three tools to support student engagement and collaboration - The Engagement Index, Whiteboard, and the Asset Library. Instructor Getting Started Info is available for review.

Instructor Functionality in CalCentral

The SIS Project achieved several major milestones since May including the integration of course rosters (with pictures) and an Instructor Action Center to request/approve WaitLists and concurrent enrollment students. This Quick Guide will help you get started and you find additional information including timelines on the SIS website.

Classroom Orientations

New to campus or new to your classroom? Our Classroom Technology Support (CTS) team can help you get acclimated to your teaching space. In-room appointments available through 8/19/2016. Request an Orientation. Drop-in "black box" orientations are also available in the Academic Innovation Studio (Dwinelle 117). Weekdays 8 am - 5 pm.

Course Capture Enhances Security

Beginning fall 2016, all videos posted through our Course Capture service will have access limited to users with a “” identity. Thanks to the extension of our Berkeley domain identities (bConnected login) to the YouTube interface, we can now manage access to course videos to those users logged in with their Berkeley ID. For ease, we recommend students and instructors follow the video links from bCourses and/or CalCentral.

Wheeler Renewal

Wheeler Hall was closed in May for important building improvements. Instructors can find information about the temporary “surge” classrooms as well as department relocation listings on the website.

bCourses Updates

Over the summer, we introduced a number of updates to enhance the bCourses experience:

New UI + Branding: We
updated bCourses to the New User Interface (UI) developed by Instructure (bCourses vendor). All institutions using Canvas (bCourses platform) were required to transition to the New UI by Summer 2016. The New UI features a variety of enhancements and changes to the platform, but maintains the existing course experience for instructors and students. We also updated the bCourses branding to work better with the new UI.

We also integrated bCourses with a number of tools to better support teaching and learning:
  • Canvas Commons: Developed by Instructure (bCourses vendor), Commons allows instructors to share and more easily re-use course materials. More information about Commons is available on the Canvas website.
  • LibGuides: The Library's LibGuides service allows instructors and departments to create customized bibliographies for their courses. The LibGuides integration will allow instructors to more easily share these guides with students in a bCourses site.
  • BlueJeans: bCourses now supports integration with Berkeley's licensed web meeting and collaboration tool, BlueJeans This integration allows meetings to be scheduled from within bCourses, and automatically adds these to the course site calendar.

Good luck with the start of the fall semester!
