The Jungle Babbler - Tropical Birding's newsletter
November 2nd, 2016
Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter! Check out our tour spotlight on short Spain and Morocco tours, which can all be easily combined. We also have the usual tour status updates, new tours, new trip reports, and upcoming events.
SOUTHERN SPAIN: The Europe Introtour
Ask many birders where to go for a first birding trip in Europe, and many will answer emphatically: "SPAIN". We have set up this tour with this in mind. It is a good introductory tour to one of Europe's richest countries for birds. It has been designed as a short tour- just 9 days - and so links with a NORTHERN SPAIN tour running immediately afterward, and a MOROCCO tour immediately before. The Southern Spain tour is timed for when mighty Great Bustards display on the plains at Extremadura, but also takes in two of the best sites in the region, with Monfrague, famed for raptors like Spanish Imperial Eagle, and Cota Donana, famed for its large numbers of waterbirds, including the rare White-headed Duck.
MARVELOUS MOROCCO: North Africa in a Nutshell
Morocco and Southern Spain are well connected, making it easy to combine these destinations in a single 17-day tour. This 9-day circuit takes in the High Atlas Mountains, searching for Crimson-winged Finch and Levaillant's Woodpecker; but also covers the Sahara Desert, where larks take over, (of particular interest are Thick-billed and Greater Hoopoe Larks), but also Cream-colored Courser and a whole suite of wheatears too. Lastly, the tour covers the coastal region, visiting Agadir and checking in on the critically endangared Northern Bald Ibis, which has it stronghold there.
NORTHERN SPAIN: The Pyrenees, Belchite Steppes and Ebro Delta
This tour runs immediately after the Southern Spain tour, and is a perfect compliment to that tour, instead focusing on the mountainous north. The Pyrenees are home to some thrilling birds, which have very localized ranges in western Europe, like Wallcreeper, White-winged Snowfinch, and Citril Finch. Other key species on offer include Europe's largest woodpecker, the enormous Black, as well as White-backed Woodpecker. A trip to lower altitudes on the steppes, will see us run into a bunch of larks and sandgrouse, while the Ebro Delta adds a swathe of waterbirds, including large concentrations of flamingoes.
These are just some of the tours we offer; for the complete tour schedule, please see our website at www.tropicalbirding.com. Also don't forget that we run dozens of customized private tours every year to these and many other destinations; a custom tour can be an attractive option for groups that enjoy traveling together, for those who want to get off the beaten track, or for people whose work schedules make joining a set-departure tour difficult.
