The Jungle Babbler - Tropical Birding's newsletter

October 6th, 2016

Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter! Check out our tour spotlight on Oaxaca, Mexico, which offers fantastic birds, scenery, and great local food. We also have the usual tour status updates, new tours, new trip reports, and upcoming events.

Oaxaca: Legendary Birds and Temples

Red-breasted ChatOaxaca is Mexico's most bird-rich state with nearly 700 species. It is also a safe, beautiful, and culturally-rich part of this vibrant county. Our tour is divided into a 12 day main tour, with an optional seven day extension that crosses the isthmus and finishes in the state of Chiapas.

The main tour begins in the dry Oaxaca valley, which is home to a number a superb endemics like Ocellated Thrasher, Oaxaca Sparrow, and Beautiful Hummingbird. We then bird both the Gulf and Pacific slopes of the Sierra Madre mountains seeking out a huge number of species from the tiny Bumblebee Hummingbird to the colorful Keel-billed Toucan, also targeting tougher local specialties like Sumichrast's Wren and Dwarf Jay. The tour finishes in the dry thorn forest next to the Pacific with unforgettable species like Red-breasted Chat and Citreoline Trogon.

The lengthy extension (which can also be taken as a stand-alone tour if you have previously visited Oaxaca) traverses the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and adds even more colorful birds to the growing tally. Favorites among these include Rosita's Bunting and the must-see Pink-headed Warbler, but we also have a decent chance to find Resplendant Quetzal (the nominate northern subspecies, which some ornithologists consider a distinct species from the ones in Costa Rica and Panama). We'll also enjoy some dramatic scenery at the Sumidero Canyon.
        Rosita's Bunting

This tour is fairly easy and a bit more relaxed than many trips, but still goes after the top endemics. Along with the fantastic birds, we'll sample some amazing local foods (real, authentic Mexican!), visit some local ruins, and take in some nice scenery. It makes a great late-winter to early-spring getaway.
