Summer is on it's way in most parts of Europe and we hope you will enjoy this new issue. We will inform you about some of our activities, events and recommend some new publications on both European affairs and the CAP.

We would also like to mention that we continuously seek for new members to join our organisation to help shape the future of European Agricultural and Rural policies. All you need to do is apply via our website with an up-to-date CV.

- Unique book on the CAP is ready: Taste it! 
We are now excited to announce the launch of the “CAP Cook Book”, which is now being printed. The CAP Cook Book offers a unique perspective about the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). No matter what is your current knowledge on this topic, it provides practical information on the CAP, written in an easy to understand way. The practical information is combined with real recipes of Slow Food chefs and portraits of (young) farmers from across Europe, explaining how they implement the CAP to make agriculture both more sustainable and more competitive. A preview of the CAP Cook Book is available on our website.

Samuel Féret, president of Groupe de Bruges, said: "We are very proud to announce the delivery of our unique CAP Cook Book.   • President of Groupe de Bruges Samuel Féret has participated in the Foodtopia conference, organised by Slow Food Youth Network in Amsterdam on 14 April. in the framework of 'CAP, What's cooking?' Project. Three scenarios of future food systems have been presented by LEI Wageningen, from a SCAR report: high tech, self-organisation and collapse scenarios. The Dutch presidency of the EU took the opportunity to highlight the need to move towards a common food policy in the EU. A summary video is available below.

  • Members of the GdB have recently participated in the World Forum on Access to Land conference, together with some 400 representatives in Spain on March 31 - April 2 2016. One of our members, Sjoerd Wartena, reports his thoughts on this conference. You can also read the official final report here
  • URGENT CALL from Eating City Summer Campus at La Bergerie, Villarceaux (France): Invitation to participate to regenerative food system.
    The fourth edition of summer campus, multi-year programme of activities is open to youth interested in promoting sustainable food. This year, applications from young professionals enrolled by a public authority at local, national or European level, especially in  jobs or activities related to food systems, will be greatly encouraged.   • URGENT CALL: Invitation for TRANSMANGO Consortium workshop on 13 June, 2016 in Brussels. One of our members, Natalia Brzezina would like to invite you to participate in this workshop that looks to develop portfolio towards resilient and sustainable food and nutrition security in Europe through organic food and farming. This workshop will involve the use of novel foresight and participatory modelling approaches. If you are interested, please contact by June 3 2016.
  • Knowledge sharing and innovation in agriculture and rural areas: Call for extended abstracts. The ERDN is organising 14th European Rural Development Network Conference in Budapest on October 3-5 2016. We would like to invite you to contribute to the topic of this conference and help shape future policies. More information and the topics overview can be found here.
  • Report on: “The new science of sustainable food systems: Overcoming barriers to food systems reform” by iPES Food. This report proposes a new analytical lens for food systems, and makes the case for reaching beyond the traditional bounds of the scientific community in conducting this analysis. In this issue, we introduce our newest member Ronan Byrne (Ireland). To this date, we have 56 members covering 21 European countries. If you would like to become a member, please send your request through our website

Ronan Byrne owns ‘The Friendly Farmer’ a farm & food business employing 6 people in the West of Ireland selling pasture-reared poultry direct to the consumer. The Friendly Farmer operates an on farm EU approved poultry abattoir. From 2004-2007 previous to setting up The Friendly Farmer, Ronan managed an arable and dairy farm close to Warsaw in Poland. For the past 3 years Ronan works with University College Dublin as a Rural Entrepreneurial Specialist, facilitating new start up rural business & social enterprises. Ronan is a firm believer in rural development. He says: “Our business was helped by EU rural and food policy initiative’s. Bottom up rural development holds the key to addressing the imbalances that exists between rural and urban Europe. Good policies enable European rural & urban citizens to benefit from vibrant rural areas.
Ronan holds an MA in EU Integration from University of Limerick and sits on EU Commission Civil Dialogue Groupings on Agriculture. You can also follow Ronan on Twitter @friendlyfarmer.
